Oxygen for the crew is suppli.ed from a bottle, located in the RH side:
console. Bottle pressure is 1800 psi, but a safety device blows' off all
oxygen overboard via an 'overpre esure discharge. line in case the bottle
pressure ex6eeds 2800 psi due to overheating or overcharging.
Bottle' pressure can be read on the indicator and must be at least 1000 or
1450 psi when the cockpit crew consists of 2 or 3 men respectively.
Oxygen becomes available, when the. shut-off and pressure regulat.ing

3.2 Leak Check of the Cockpit Oxygen System

In this check. you must verify whether the iO-psi pressure line,
disconnected from the storage bottle, is absolutely leakproof. Using a
nitrogen source (1000 kPa, 150 psi), connected to the co-pilot I s mask
connection and. a pressure indicator, connected to the pilot's mask
connection, you check. that there is no drop in pressure in a 15-minute
period. If there is a drop, detect it and cure it.
While releasing the nitrogen, you let it blow against a clean mirror. If a
residue is left: it indicates that the pres.sure 'line and/or mask
connections are con t ami.nat ad with oil or grease and the pressure line-
and mask c.onnections must be disassembled and cleaned.

4~ P~~SENGER OXYGEN
SYSTEM

This system comprises oxygen drop-out' hatches through the cabin and toilet
ccmpart:nent •. Each hatch compartment contains an oxygen generator and three
oxygen masks. All hat ches open automatically when the c ac i n altitude,
sensed by a cabin altitude switch, located in the ceiling of the cockpit
entrance, exceeds 13,500· ft. In the cockpit there is an override
switc.h which 1 when operated, causes all hatches to open. Each individual
hatch can also be opened by inserting a thin pointed object into a hole at
the lower side of the hatch.
'Nnen 'a hatch is open. and the. lanyard o.f any of t-he three masks is pulled,
.the oxygen:..·generat.or .Ls .triggered.
The .genezaz or- duration is sufficient to supply oxygen for 15 minutes. Each
mask has. an eccncmi.aar bag. .

CAUTION: j:."s A RESIiLT OF OXYGEN PRODUCTION, GE~~RATOR TEMPERATURE INCREASES

TO 260 ..DEGREES c.
When the hatches have been released a blue MASK RELEASE light on the Rli
side console is on. The NO SMOKING signs in the· cabin come on too.

Te _.release . the -haz.che s ~ their solenoids must be e.nergized (see for diagram
rold-out page at the end of this chapter)e

The sole!1oids energize when:

che : over.~ide switch is momentarily pressed to OVER.t.-oqr_,
when the release solenoid of ·the release control and indication relay is
energized.

The latch-type release centrol and indication relay energizes and closes
its contact when:
OVERRis 'selected;
the cabin altitude exceeds 13,500 ft or
TEST isselected on the test panel in the cockpit.

The contact stays .i.n this position unless the reset solenoid of the
release control and lndication relay is energized.

When the. release sol.enoi4 is energized:

a time delay relay (slow ·operate) opens its contacts after 5. seconds to
interrupt the power for the release solenoids;
hatch the blue M..A..SRKELEASE on and
light comes the NO SMOKINGsigns come

5. PASSENGER OXYGEN SYSTEM

5.1 Functional Test

This test is to verify whether the drop-out hatches can electrically be

opened. After connecting the vacuum test pump and test box (to read the
test altitude) to the open end of the 13,500 ft switch, slowly apply
vacuum.
When the simulated cabin altitude reaches 13,500 ..: 500 ft check that:
- the hatches open,
- the MASK P..ELEASElight on the .RH console comes on and
- the NO SMOKING signs·· in the cab in come on.

502 Oxygen ~enerator Removal

To remove a generator, open the· heat shield and t ake the generator out
of the c Li.p. Then dis·connect the three hoses of the masks.

5.3 Closing a Drop-out Hatch

To close a hatch, its latching mechanism must .be reset. Th.i s is done by
pressing the manual reset lever in the gener, tor compartment .. ·Ln case the
hatches were electrically opened, the PASS OXYGEN!1.ASKSreset switch on
the test panel must be pressed t~ RESET: prior to closing the hatches.

mask reLease reLay, the contacts cLose to permit power to go to the

drop-out hatch Latches. At the same time the p·assenger .G2(}"~r..e:rease
L amp, in the fLight compartment, and the NO SMOKING Lamps, in the
.w :
passenger compartment, come on. Atter 5 seconds, the time deLay reLay
operates; to break the circuit to the Latching mechanism.

In the event of a faiLure, in the automatic circuit, the;override switch

can be set t~ OVERRIDE. 28 V dc power from the PASSENGER~OXYGEN MASKS-MAN
bus will operate the drop-out hatch latching mechanism. .

To set the test switch to test, wilL energize the mask reLease relay; to
permit ·eLectricaL power to open the Latching mechanisms. Whenever the
system has been electricaLly operated the reset switch must be first set
to the RESET position, to changeover the mask reLay contacts, and then to
the NORMAL position.

With the drop-out hatch in the open position, the mask is removed trom its
mount and placed on the face. This pulls the lanyard to operate the
generator firing mechanism. Pure oxygen flows to the mask. The oxygen flow
rate will gradually decrease to meet the descent flow reQuirements. As the
flow decreases, from the generator, the economiser bag mixes pure oxygen
with ambient air. Exhaled air is vented to.atmosphere.
