Questions/Instructions:
1. List at least one idea or thought from the movie about Florence Nightingale related to the four main
concepts in Nursing:
a. Man
The patients in the movie are the soldiers of the British army; all of which are injured and sick from the war
they had.
b. Health
The soldiers (patients) were were having a deficiency of clean and sterile medicine, rations, and linen to
nurse them all back to health. Florence Nightingale talked to the queen about this to nurse the army better.
c. Nursing
Florence Nightingale bought and made her own materials so that her patients could eat and recover; it was
one of the few things she could control during the war in the movie.
d. Environment
The place where soldiers were taken for recovery was in the Scutari Barracks in Turkey, which was really
unsanitary, and was unfit for the soldiers to properly recover in; in fact, the living conditions of the barracks

even made soldiers more sick. Thankfully, Florence Nightingale discussed this to the queen so that not only
Page
can she nurse the soldiers better, but also improve the healthcare system in general as well.
2. Recall and write down one situation similar to any scene in the movie which you had experienced or
observed.
Near the end of the movie, Florence Nightingale’s father came to provide her with some of his wisdom and
reassurance, and at that moment I felt a little emotional since it reminded me of the times when my dad
would do the same thing; I would be isolated and have no motivation to talk, eat or even do anything
because of a sad experience that I dealt with in the past. And after that, he talked to me and made me
come back to my senses, and that it’s okay to fail sometimes, and that that failure of mine was just a part of
God’s plan. For my other groupmates, they said that Florence’s determination and devotion to help others
is something we all feel, and I feel that way too.
3. What are your personal reflections about the movie? You may include your feelings, emotions, thoughts
and insights while watching the movie.
While I was watching the movie, I felt a little sad about how underdeveloped and undervalued nursing was
in the society; people were only able to gain a better understanding and grasp of its importance thanks to
Florence’s influence. I realized that Florence Nightingale has went through so much and that all of the
things she has gone through in her life helped nursing be what it is today. I also saw that she took so many
risks and sacrifices along the way too and it made me think, that maybe, this might be how my future will be
like; helping others and sacrificing myself for it. For my groupmates, watching the movie made them feel
moved, and also reminded them why they chose this course.
4. As a student nurse, suggest one way in which you can help uplift the standards of the nursing
profession inspired by Florence Nightingale.
As a student nurse, even though nurses must refer to the textbooks, nurses must also be taught about the
importance of the technicality of nursing practices so that the standards and professionalism of the craft
can be maintained. A group member of mine believe that nurses should have a great relationship with other
medical professionals to perform better, while a few other of my group members stated that values and
fundamentals of the nursing practice should be constantly kept in mind by nurses to uplift the standards of
the nursing profession.
