1. With the aid of neat diagrams explain the 4 strokes of a petrol engine.
Indicate where and during which stroke is the fuel air mixture ignited by the
spark plug. Your diagram should show the position of the input and output
valves for each stroke.
2. Give a neat, labelled sketch of the piston assembly. (piston, rings, connecting
rod, gudgeon pin, small and big end bearing, connecting cap) State the
function of the piston rings. What material is used to manufacture the piston
and the rings?
3. Draw a layout diagram of the fuel feed system of a diesel engine. (fuel tank,
primary and secondary filters, injectors, fuel injector pump, feed pump,
governor, return pipe) Explain the working of the feed pump.
4. Explain the purpose of the thermostat valve in the cooling system of an
engine. With a neat diagram explain how a radiator radiates heat. What is the
purpose of the fan?
5. Explain the working of a battery coil ignition. system. How is the ignition
timing advanced and retarded as the engine speedup and slows down?
