LEARNING COMPETENCIES

CS_RS12-Id-e-2: Writes a research title

CS_RS12-Id-e-2: Describes the background of research

LEARNING OUTCOMES

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. Define the research title
2. Discuss the elements and parameters in writing a good title
3. Write a good title for a research topic.
4. Describe the background of research.
5. Explain the elements included in the background.
6. Formulate the background of the research.

INTRODUCTION

Identifying a good research topic is one of the most difficult challenges of

beginning researchers. Most often, beginning researchers find it hard to think
of acceptable research topic because of the lack of experience in conducting a
research. However, several authors have cited some pointers in order to help
novice researchers to come up with research topics and titles that fit to the
criteria. Once a research problem is already identified, another difficulty that
young researchers face is how to write a good research title. Furthermore,
reading the research title sometimes confuses the readers as to the reason for
the conduct of such study. Hence, the need to provide a background of the
research problem to prove the significance and validity of the said research.
In this module, you will learn how to write a good quantitative research title.
You will also be able to identify the different elements to consider when writing
the title of your own research. Also, you will learn how to craft a background
of the study and the different elements to be included in it.

A research title, or the title of the research is the research problem

itself in capsule form. It summarizes the main idea of your study. This
means that the research title already gives the readers an idea of
what your research is all about. Hence, it is important that the
research title must be clear, original, concise and
comprehensive. It must contain the fewest possible words needed
to adequately describe the content and/or purpose of your research.

What is It

Are you ready? Come on! Read the information below to learn
the guidelines to be followed when writing the research title.

Selected Guidelines in the Formulation of a Research Title

1. The title must contain the following elements:
a. aim or purpose of the study
b. place or setting or locale of the study
c. respondents or participants involved in the study
d. time or period when the study was conducted
If the title becomes too long because of these elements, the time or period
may be ommitted. Also, placing the study site or research locale in the
title makes it too specific so it may be recommended that these elements
be placed in the Methods section of the research write-up.
2. The title must be broad enough to include all aspects of the study but should
be brief and concise as possible.
3. The use of terms as “Analysis of…”, “A Study of…”, “An Investigation of…”
and the like should be avoided. All these are understood to have been done
in the research. These phrases are already obvious unless these words are
necessary to convey the scope of the study or the type (evaluation,
comparative, and the like) of the study.
4. If the title contains more than one line, it should be written in an inverted
pyramid.
5. When typed or encoded in the title page, all words in the title should be in
capital letters.
6. If possible, the title should not be longer than 15 substantive words.
7. Avoid a long, detailed title that gives too much information.
8. To shorten the title, delete the terms “assessment” or “evaluation” if these
are aready emphasized in the text.

After going through the guidelines, what could be an appropriate

research title for your chosen topic? Write it down.

17
The background of the study is basically an overview of the
research study. Its main focus is to discuss the importance and
validity of the problem identified. It also provides an explanation as
to the reason for the conduct of the study. This part presents the
current state of knowledge or essential information regarding the
problem in order to understand the main body of the investigation.

How To Craft the Background of the Research

An effective background as mentioned by Orleans (2018) discusses about the
following elements:
 Context of the research topic
- As a researcher, you are to explain that the general field/ area in which the
current study belongs remain to be a significant area of research up to the
present. In this portion, you shall present and discuss the existing and present
conditions of the research problem in general, based on known facts and
literature.
 Central thesis
- The general field/ area that you are working on is broad, so you are to specify
what really is the thesis (main idea/ concept/ theory) in your study that you,
as the researcher is trying to address. To identify the central thesis, you must
determine first the research gap (an area of the research topic that is missing/
conflicting in the existing literature; also described as an issue that has not
been fully addressed in previous studies due to conflicting results). In some
instances, the central thesis may be based on common problems that people
experience which have not yet been solved.
 Brief description of the study
- Once the gap is identified, you as the researcher shall discuss and present
a brief description of the problem that you are specifically working on. You
must be able to provide justifications or reasons for the need to conduct your
current study.
 General significance of the research
- To help you prove the need to conduct the present study, you have to
provide a general significance of the findings of your study to common and
relevant situations. General significance depends on who are greatly affected
by your current study. It be a contribution to the decision-making process of
the heads of a department, company, institution, among others. It can also be

Mostly, the background of the study is written using the

macro to micro approach. This means describing the
problem from the global/ international scenario down to the
national/ local/ specific setting.

Here is an example for you to understand the elements of
the background of the study. Ready? Set Go!

People of different ages use computers in any aspect of their life such
as in communicating with others, in transacting businesses and in
gathering or sharing information. Because of the variety of uses people
get from technology, specifically on computers, advances in computer
applications and tools is also developing in a rapid rate. This speedy
development in the field of Information and Communications Technology
(ICT) poses a big challenge to educators. Since computers are widely
Context of the Study

used either professionally or personally, educators must be able to mould

and produce learners who are able to cope with the advances of
technology. Bekmezci, et. al. (2015) believed that in order to follow
technological developments, one must learn how to use the technology
efficiently and effectively.

Hence, the Department of Education (DepEd) of the Philippines has

its K to 12 Curriculum in its education system. This curriculum would
require the learners to undergo two more years in high school – called
the senior high school before he/she is declared as a high school
graduate. One of the subjects in the senior high school is the

would require the teachers to educate the learners on the practical

Research Gap

But, looking at the competencies in the old education curriculum,

prior to the K to 12 Curriculum, it can be noted that not all of the learners
are able to have the basic knowledge of computers. Only those learners
who had Computer technology as the major in their Technology and
Livelihood Education (TLE) were blessed to have undergone the basics
of computers, its hardware and software. Although internet shops can
provide Internet and computer services to these non-ICT major students,

Activity # 2 Reading Activity

Direction: Read the selection carefully. Answer the questions that follow.

Menstruation is a normal physiological process that begins during adolescence. The first
menstruation (menarche) occurs between 11 and 15 years with a mean age of 13 years.
According to Esimai and Esan (2010), many adolescents have little or no information about
normal and abnormal menstruation. The lack of scientific knowledge on menstruation may
spawn reproductive health problems in adolescent women, such as dysmenorrhea,
gastrointestinal manifestations; depression; and reproductive tract infections which may in turn
cause congestive dysmenorrhea (Adinma & Adinma, 2008). Also, the misconceptions and
faulty perceptions about menstruation and menstrual cycle will lead to faulty and unhygienic
menstrual practices.
Unhygienic menstrual practices may affect the health of female students such as increased
vulnerability to reproductive tract infections (RTIs) and pelvic inflammatory diseases (PIDs) and
other complications. Infections due to lack of hygiene during menstruation have been reported
in many studies (Mudey, et. al., 2010; Khanna, Goyal & Bhawsar, 2005). Up until now, poor
menstrual hygiene in developing countries has been an insufficiently acknowledged problem.
In several cultures there are cultural and/or religious taboos concerning blood, menstruating
girls and women and menstrual hygiene. As a result, many young girls lack appropriate
information on menstrual hygiene. Studies that the menstrual information girls did have was
acquired primarily through mothers, television, friends, teachers and relatives.

Taking into account the health implications and prevailing socio-cultural and economic
factors, there is consensus that action needs to be taken to ensure that girls can manage their
menstruation while at school in a comfortable, dignified, safe, and equitable manner, and that
local research is needed to inform enabling strategies. Yet, despite growing research around
this emerging topic, it remains so nascent and taboo (Sommer & Sahin, 2013), that research
has not been undertaken in many countries for policymakers and practitioners to understand
girls’ experiences in their own local context. To address this concern, this study is conceived in
order to assess the knowledge level, attitudes and practices of secondary school students on
menstrual health management in Labogon National High School. This study will serve as an
evaluation of the current status of menstrual health management and policies implemented in
the identified school in Mandaue City, Cebu, Philippines. This study can also contribute in
improving the guidelines and implementations of WASH and other programs of DepEd on the
health and well-being of the students in the said school.
