INSTALLATION
This document describes how to install FORGAS and the FlexLM licensing system required by
FORGAS. This version of FORGAS can ONLY be operated using a FlexLM license. The end
of this document lists remedies for errors that can occur during the installation or execution of
FORGAS. For additional help, go to https://www.customercarecenter.slb.com.
If you are currently using a dongle (hardware key) which attaches to a USB port, contact your
Schlumberger Account Manager and request to have your license modified to use FlexLM.
Use the following procedure:
(a) In Windows 7:
i. Right cick on the Windows start icon.
ii. Select Run
(b) In Windows 10:
i. Select the Windows Start icon and then select All apps
ii. Select Windows System from the list of applications
iii. Select Command Prompt
(c) For all versions of Windows, type in the following line:
IPCONFIG/ALL >filename
where filename is a name of a file (including the path) in which this information
should be stored (e.g. IPCONFIG/ALL > d:\work\myComputerConfig.txt)
3. Your Schlumberger Account Manager will provide a FLEXLM license file (usually ending
in .lic), which contains the validation information for the software.
1. Right click on setup.exe in the downloaded image and then select Run as
administrator. You must select Run as administrator for the SPT Licensing installation
to work. The panel shown in Figure 1 will appear.
4. The License term & conditions panel will appear, as shown in Figure 3.
5. Click on License Agreement to read the software license agreement. After reading that
document, click on the X in the upper right hand corner to close that document.
6. If you do not agree with the license agreement, click on Cancel and then click on Exit to
halt the installation procedure.
7. If the license terms and conditions are acceptable, click on the check box next to I agree
to the license terms and conditions. Then click on Next.
8. The installation software will then confirm that your system is suitable to run FORGAS
(i.e. either Windows 7 or Windows 10), as shown in Figure 4.
9. If an error message is presented, you will need to select Cancel to stop the installation
procedure and then remedy the problem (e.g. get a computer which uses either
Windows 7 or Windows 10).
11. Select the directory in which the software should be installed (see Figure 5). You can
either use the default directory (C:\Program Files (x86)\Schlumberger) or specify
another directory name. The software will be installed into a subdirectory named
FORGAS 10.8.1 of that listed directory name. Click on Install.
12. The installation program will copy the files into the specified directory.
Installation Page 7
13. Once all of the appropriate files have been copied, a panel similiar to that shown in
Figure 6 will appear.
14. To view the release notes which describe the enhancements in this version, click on
Release Notes. Once finished viewing those notes, click on the X on the upper right
hand corner to close that document.
15. Select Close.
16. You will be returned to the panel which allows you to select the product to install (as
shown in Figure 2).
17. If you already have a FlexLM License Manager (either SPT License Handler or
Schlumberger License Manager) installed on your computer, then select Exit. If you
Installation Page 8
already have the SPT License Handler working on your computer, go to step 2 of Section
0.2.1 after starting the SPT FlexLM license handler (select Start -> All Programs (for
Windows 7) or All apps (for Windows 10) -> SPT Group -> License Handler -> License
Handler). If you have installed the Schlumberger License Manager, follow the
instructions in Section 0.2.2 instead.
2. The SPT License Handler panel will appear, similar to that shown in Figure 7.
4. Select the type of license you are using (see Figure 8). If the FlexLM license file is
located on another computer, select Connect to a Network Lisense Server. Otherwise,
select Install a License Server on this machine. Then click on Next >.
5. On the Select Installation Folder panel, specify the name of the folder where the FlexLM
license handler software should be stored, similiar to that shown in Figure 9. Use the
Browse... button to select another directory. Use the Disk Cost... button to see the size
of the SPT License Handler and the available room on each of your hard drives. Once
you have selected the desired directory, select Next >.
7. The software will copy the SPT License Handler software to your computer.
9. Next you need to instruct the SPT License Handler where to find the license file.
Installation Page 9
10. Start the SPT License Handler by selecting the Windows Start button, then select either
All Programs in Windows 7 or All apps in Windows 10. Select SPT Group -> License
Handler -> License Handler. The SPT License Handler panel will appear, as shown in
Figure 10.
12. If you previously selected Use a license server on this machine, the panel shown in
Figure 11 will be displayed. Specify the name of your computer by clicking on Add local
server. Use the Browse button to select the directory in which the FLEXLM license file
for FORGAS is located. Then specify the directory in which the FlexLM software was
installed. Click on Install license server to start the server. If that button is grayed out,
and thus unavailable, click on Restart license server. Select Close.
13. If you previously selected Connect to a network license server, the panel shown in
Figure 12 will be displayed. Specify the name of your computer on which the FlexLM
license is located in the format of port@computer name (e.g. 27000@server1). Select
OK.
where port@server is the port number and the computer name (e.g.
27000@server1 or @localhost) where the FlexLM license file is located.
If you are using OLGAS in PIPESIM, you will also see the OLGAS vendor file path in
this parameter. The software can only read the first 500 characters of this variable.
Remove references to unused versions of PIPESIM to shorten the path.
(f) Click on OK.
(g) Click on Apply (if available) and then click on OK.
(h) Close the Control Panel by clicking on the X in the upper right hand corner.
4. Start the Schlumberger License Manager, by selecting Start, then select either All
Programs (in Windows 7) or All apps (in Windows 10). Scroll through the programs list
to select Schlumberger and Schlumberger Licensing 2015.1. Then select
Schlumberger Licensing to open the Schlumberger Licensing panel, as shown in
Figure 15.
5. If the licensing system is already set up to use all the licenses in a specified folder (which
is indicated by a folder name in the Local License Server area at the top of the panel),
then you need to select Reread to have the licensing software read all of the licenses in
that directory (including the newly added FORGAS license). If Reread is grayed out (and
thus not available), then select Start instead.
Installation Page 15
(a) select File from the main menu and then select Advanced options... A panel
similar to that shown in Figure 16 will appear.
(b) In the License Usage Settings section (near the bottom), select the Folder radio
button. If the Folder button is unavailable (grayed out), select Cancel to exit the
panel, select Stop on the Schlumberger Licensing panel and then go back to the
previous step (i.e. select File and Advanced options...).
(c) Select OK to return to the Schlumberger Licensing panel.
(d) Select Add license folder..., then type the folder name in which the license files are
located.
(e) Select Stop and then click on Start.
7. In all cases, once the Message Log indicates the process is complete, click on Status....
8. In the search area, type in FORGAS and click on the magnifying glass icon.
Complete the installation, then run FORGASReg.vbs from the installation directory.
Unknown Error
The software has had an issue with the FlexLM licensing system which could be caused by a
number of reasons. The most likely cause of this error is some sort of corruption with the
Installation Page 19
software or license manager. You will need to reinstall both the license manager and the
software. If this error persists, contact your Schlumberger Account Manager.
The software has had an issue reading the FlexLM license file. This could be due to the
license file not having the correct information or the connection to the license server is down.
You should verify that the license server is running, that the network connection to the license
server is active, that the server software is running and that a valid license file is present in the
license directory.
The software has had an issue reading the FlexLM license file from the server or the version of
software is not compatible with your license file. You should verify that the license file is
present in the license directory on the server and that the license file has been read correctly.
If the problem persists, please contact your Schlumberger Account Manager for a new version
of the license file and/or software. In addition, this error message will be presented in the
event that a network outage occurs during a license checking operation.
The software has had an issue with closing the connection with the FlexLM license server.
This will require a restart of the license manager as the licenses checked out by the software
will not be available to other users.
To use the OLGAS (1992) or OLGAS 2-Phase multiphase pressure loss models (as selected
on the Methods panel in the Plant data), you need to purchase or rent a license to OLGAS
2-Phase. Contact your Schlumberger Account Manager to add OLGAS 2-Phase to your
license.
The software reads the path listed for the SCPLMD_LICENSE_FILE environment variable to
determine where the OLGAS 2-Phase vendor license file is installed (usually c:\Program
Files (X86)\Common Files\Schlumberger\OLGAS2000\NeotecOlgas6.lic). Either the path is
too long to read (longer than 500 characters) or the required information is missing from that
path. To edit this environment variable, follow these steps:
3. Select the Environment Variables… icon (near the bottom of the panel, as shown in
Figure 13).
where port@server is the port number and the computer name (e.g. 27000@server1 or
@localhost) where the FlexLM license file is located.
If the path is too long, delete unnecesssary paths (such as unused PIPESIM directories).
6. Click on OK.
8. Close the Control Panel by clicking on the X in the upper right hand corner.
If the vendor file (NeotecOlgas6.lic) has expired, then the software may stop execution when
you select to run a case that uses OLGAS 2-Phase. To confirm if this file has expired, use
Notepad or an ASCII file editor to view this file (see Figure 17), usually located as follows:
If the date listed in this file has expired, contact your Schlumberger Account Manager to get an
updated version and copy that new file into this same location.
Run FORGASReg.vbs, located in the installation folder. If all messages are successful, then
try running the program again; otherwise, note any errors while registering and contact us for
more support.
