EDC Lab 4

1) The document describes an electronics lab experiment on full wave rectification using diodes. Students will simulate and build a full wave rectifier circuit using diodes and compare the output waveform to the input. 2) The experiment involves simulating the circuit in two parts: with individual diodes, and with a transformer. Students will observe and compare the output waveforms, measure peak voltages, and calculate the peak inverse voltage of one diode. 3) In the practical implementation, students will build the circuit and use an oscilloscope to observe the input and output waveforms. They will measure the peak inverse voltage and discuss techniques for obtaining pure DC output.

LABORATORY EXERCISE -4
Applications of Diode (Full wave Rectification)
Objective:

Study the Applications of Diodes.

1. The primary purpose of this lab is to develop a working knowledge of diode. Diodes can be used in
variety of circuits for various applications one of which is rectifiers.
Equipment and components
2. The following component and test equipment is required.
a) PN Diode
b) Oscilloscope
c) Function Generator
d) Resistors
e) Power Supply
The Experiment:
3. The experiment is broken down in two parts; each part involves simulation of the given circuit and then
its practical implementation to observe the results.
Full Wave Rectifier (Part A – Simulation I)
4. In the last lab exercise you experimented with half wave rectifier circuits. Now we will experiment with
full wave rectification.

Procedure

a) First draw the circuit as shown in figure 1A_1. Make sure that you have entered the correct values
for the source VSIN.
b) We will perform a “Mixed” signal transient analysis and graph settings from “Edit graph option”
should be made as shown in figure 1A_2. Just like previous experiments, students are encouraged
to understand the change in graph obtained by changing various parameters of the simulation
profile.
c) Plot the graphs of Vin and Vout, which to be taken across the 1k ohm resistor (hint: use voltage
differential markers, not voltage level markers). Save the graph and attach it with your lab report.
d) Observe the graph between Vin and Vout.
e) Now use both the voltage differential marker and voltage level marker across the resistor and
observe the difference. Plot both curves and include in your lab report.

Repeat the experiment using a Transformer as shown in figure 1B_1, and change the simulation profile given
in figure 1A_2 accordingly (Note the new Frequency of the source is 60 Hz)

Observations/Measurements:
5. For the above two exercises answer the following questions in your report:
a) Calculate the peak inverse voltage (PIV) of the one diode. Include the calculations in your
report.
b) Do you observe the difference between peak voltages of the rectified wave and input signal?
Measure the voltage and explain why the difference occurs?
c) What difference do you observe between the graph obtained from “voltage differential marker”
and “voltage level marker”? Explain why both the graphs are different from each other.
d) Another technique used for full wave rectification is the use of centre tapped transformer.
Explain which technique is better and why?

Full Wave Rectifier (Part B – Implementation)

6. After circuit simulation, the next step involves practical implementation of the circuit.

Procedure:
 Patch the circuit as shown in figure 1A_1.
 Observe the waveforms of Vin and Vout on the oscilloscope. Save your results and include them
in your lab report.

 To measure Vout connect two channels of oscilloscope. Connect channel 1 to upper pin of load
resistance and Channel 2 at bottom pin.
 On your oscilloscope select math function. Now set “Source A” as channel 1 and “Source B” to
channel 2
 Under operate change to expression “A-B”
 Measure the peak inverse voltage (PIV) of this practically implemented rectifier and compare
the results obtained. Explain the differences, if any, in your lab report.
 As you have observed in your graph, we do not still have a pure DC voltage. The rectified
voltage is still pulsating. Can you think of any technique that can help you remove these pulses?
(Hint: Take a look at your previous labs, you’ve done the procedure).
Observations/Measurements:
Answer the questions asked in 5(c), 5(d) and 5(e). Include them in your lab report.
Lab Report:
Each student group has to submit detailed lab report with proper outputs and results obtained
by performing experiment. The format of the report should be as explained by the course
instructor. Your lab report is due before the next lab.
