What is It

IMPORTANCE OF PLAN
Plans give a visual presentation of the proposed structure when completed.
It also shows how it will be constructed.
Plans are important because:

 It shows the location and various features of the site and illustrate
detail about the building, e.g. construction detail for specific trade
people.
 It shows the height, position and bulk of the building so that council
can determine compliance to its code.
 It allows builders and trades people to prepare written quotation.
Remember written quotations (quotes) or contracts should only relate
to approved building plans. An estimate should be given prior to
council approval
 It illustrates to trades people the structure to be built
READING AND INTERPRETING WORK PLANS
A Blueprint is a type of paper-based reproduction usually of technical
drawing, documenting done by architecture or an engineering design. Generally,
The term “blueprint” refers to any detailed plan of a building.
A working drawing is a type of technical drawing, which is part of the
documentation needed to build an engineering product or architectural plan. These
drawings use various kinds of lines, dimensions, notes, symbols, and abbreviations
to describe a structure to be built.
A Working Drawing should include:
Classification of Work Plan
1. Floor Plan is a drawing to scale, showing a view from above, of the relationships
between rooms, spaces, traffic patterns, and other physical features at one level of
a structure. It shows the following:

 Arrangement and names of the rooms

 Location of all external and internal walls
 Room size
 Length and width dimensions
 Position of doors and windows
 Built-in furniture
 Sectioning lines and labels in alphabetical order eaves lines roof structure
as shown by broken diagonal lines to represent hips and valleys.

sophierobinson.co.uk., Technical Floor Plan

2. Elevation Plan is a scaled drawing that shows the shape and finishes of all
sides of the exterior of a building. It includes dimensions that cannot be shown on a
floor plan such as the height dimensions.

designbuildings.co.uk, Elevation – Designing Buildings

4. Framing Plan is a plan of each of a building showing the makeup of beams and
girders on the floors, and their connection, using a simplified system of symbols
and drafting line work.

researchgate.net, Typical Floor Framing Plan/Roof Plan

3. Foundation Plan is a plan view drawing, in section, showing the location and
size of footings, piers, columns, foundation walls, and supporting beams.

pinterest.com, Foundation Plan

Details are working drawings that are drawn to the scale of 1:100, which is
rather small. It is not always possible to show important shapes, positions for
assembly, and dimensions of specific parts of a building
Specification is a written document prepared by an architect which serves
as a set of instructions or guidelines that accompanies a working drawing. It
describes how certain aspects of building construction are to be done and which
materials are to be used.
TYPES OF FOUNDATION
1. SHALLOW FOUNDATION

a) Individual Footing or Isolated

Footing is the most common type of
foundation used for building
construction. This foundation is
constructed for a single column and
also called a pad foundation
civiltoday.com, Individual Footing (Shallow)

b) Combine Footing is constructed

when two or more columns are close
enough and their isolated footing
overlap each other.

gharpedia.com, Combined Footings

c) Spread footings are those whose base

is wider than a typical load-bearing
wall foundations. The wider base of
this footing type spreads the weight
from the building structure over more
area and provides better stability. sites.google.com, Spread Footings

d) Raft or mat Foundation are the

types of foundation which are spread
across the entire area of the building
to support heavy structural loads
from columns and walls. paddyengineering.blogspot.com,

Mat or Raft Foundation

2. DEEP FOUNDATION

a) Pile Foundation is a type of deep

foundation which is used to transfer
heavy loads from the structure to a
hard rock strata much deep below the
ground level

civiltoday.com, Pile Foundation

b) Drilled Shafts or Caisson
Foundation is a type of foundation
and has an action similar to pile
foundations. It resists loads from
structure through shaft resistance.
This is not suitable when deep
deposits or soft clays and loose,
water-bearing granular soil exist.

Note: Knowing how to read and interpret a working drawing saves time, effort,
money in the construction of the building.

SELECT TOOLS, MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT

The most important things to consider in selecting tools are strength of material,
design and comfort. The first consideration should be to obtain the tool made of the
best possible materials. This is not only assures long life but also makes for speed
and efficiency on the job. Tools, materials and equipment are very important in
performing a job; these are very helpful and make our job easier.

Materials Used in Brick/Block Laying Activities:

1. Concrete Hollow Blocks (CHB). These are the most widely used masonry
materials for all types of construction such as walls, partition and fences. Concrete
blocks are building modules resembling large bricks molded from concrete.
Commercial sizes of CHB are as follows:

 0.10 m 0.20 m x 0.40;

 0.125 m x 0.20 m x 0.40 m; and
 0.15 m x o.20 m x 0.40 m. pintirest.com,

2. Bricks are manufactured from clay and other minerals processed into a
workable consistency, molded to sizes and fired in kiln for stronger, more attractive
products.

indiamart.com, Red Clay Brick

3. Other materials include sand and gravel, deformed reinforced bars, tie wire and
other materials used in general masonry work.
STOCKPILE MATERIALS FOR LAYING BRICK/BLOCK STRUCTURE
OSHA has several guidelines regarding the stockpiling and handling of materials.
You must adhere to these and all OSHA guidelines:

 All materials stored in ties should be stacked, racked, blocked, interlocked, or

otherwise secured to prevent sliding, falling or collapsing.
 Maximum safe load limits of floors within buildings and structures should be
posted in all storage areas and maximum safe loads should not be exceeded.
 Aisles and passageways should be kept clear to provide for the free and safe
movement of material handling equipment or employees.
 Materials stored inside buildings under construction should not be placed
within 6’ of any hoist way or inside floor openings nor within 10’ of an exterior
wall that does not extend above the top of the material stored.
 Each employee required working on stored material in silos, hoppers, tanks and
similar storage areas should be equipped with personal fall-arrest equipment.
 Non compatible materials should be segregated in storage.
 Bagged materials should be stacked by stepping back the layers and cross-
keying the bags at least every ten bags high.
 Materials should not be stored on scaffolds or runways in excess of supplies
needed for immediate operations.
 Stockpiles of palletized brick should not be higher than 7’. When a loose brick
stockpile reaches a height of 4’, it should be tapered back 2” in every foot of
height above the 4’ level.
 When loose masonry blocks are stockpiled higher that 6’, the stack should be
tapered back one-half block per tier above the 6’ level.

Working Stacks
Working stacks of brick are used at the wall, on the ground, or on the
scaffold platform. Palletized brick is unbundled and moved to where it will be
needed. When stacking materials in working piles, keep the pile neat and vertically
in line to eliminate the possibility of snagging your clothes. Keep the piles about 3’
high so that you can easily get to the brick. Bricks and other materials stacked too
high not only pose a safety hazard, but may reduce productivity.
The most common way to stack bricks is to reverse the direction of every other
course so that the stack is secure. Such a stack should be no more that 3’ high and
no closer than 2’ to the wall. Wider stacks can be made by alternating a pattern of
eight bricks.
