Arithmetic Sum Module 10

This document discusses arithmetic sequences and provides formulas to calculate the sum and terms of arithmetic sequences. It gives examples of using the formulas to find the sum of terms, individual terms, and arithmetic means. Formulas are provided to calculate the sum of an arithmetic sequence when the last term is known or unknown, and to find individual terms using the common difference. Practice problems are included at the end to calculate sums, terms, and means of various arithmetic sequences.

Arithmetic Sum is the sum of arithmetic sequences.

To get the sum of arithmetic sequence, we use two

formulas:

𝑛𝑛
1. Sn = (a1 + an) when an/ last term is known
2
𝑛𝑛
2. Sn = 2 [2a1 + d (n – 1)] when an/ last term is unknown

Examples:
1. 6, 13, 20, … 69. Find the sum of the first ten terms.
We will use the first formula because the an/ last term is given/ known.
Solution:
𝑛𝑛
Sn = (a1 + an) where n = number of terms; a1 = first term an = last term
2
By substituting the values, we get
10
S10 = ( 6 + 69)
2

= 5 (75)
S10 = 375

2. 91, 81, 71, … 1. Find the sum of the first ten terms.
We will use the first formula because the an/ last term is given/ known.
Solution:
𝑛𝑛
Sn = 2(a1 + an) where n = number of terms; a1 = first term an = last term
By substituting the values, we get
10
S10 = ( 91 + 1)
2

= 5 (92)
S10 = 460

3 1 1
3. 1, 4, 2, 4, … find the sum of the first ten terms.

We will use the second formula because the an/ last term is missing/ not given.
Solution:
𝑛𝑛
Sn = 2 [2a1 + d (n – 1)] where n = number of term; a1 = first term; d = common difference

By substituting the values, we get

10 1
S10 = [2(1) + (− ) (10-1)]
2 4
1
= 5 [2 + (− 4)(9)] in here apply the rules in multiplying fractions
9
= 5 [2 + (− 4)] in here apply the rules in adding fractions
1
= 5 (− ) apply the rules in multiplying fractions
4
5
S10 = − 4

4. -5, 0, 5, … find the sum of the first ten terms.

We will use the second formula because the an/ last term is missing/ not given.

Solution:

𝑛𝑛
Sn = 2 [2a1 + d (n – 1)] where n = number of term; a1 = first term; d = common difference

By substituting the values, we get

10
S10 = [2(-5) + (-5)(10-1)]
2

= 5 [-10 + (-5)(9)] apply the rules in multiplying unlike signs integers

= 5 [-10 + (-45)] apply the rules in adding same signs integers
= 5 (-55)
S10 = -275

Arithmetic Means are the terms between two terms. To get the terms missing, simply use the formula to
get the nth term of an arithmetic sequence.
an = a1 + d (n – 1) where an = last term a1 = first term d = common difference n = no. of terms
Examples:
1. Find the arithmetic mean between 66 and 78.
an = a1 + d (n – 1) by substituting the values, we get
78 = 66 + d (3 – 1) d is unknown because there is no second term
78 = 66 + d (2)
78 = 66 + 2d
78 – 66 = 2d transpose 66 to the left side and change the sign
12 = 2d
12 2𝑑𝑑
= divide both sides by 2 to remain d
2 2

d=6
Since common difference is known, add the first term by the difference to get the next term.
66 + 6 = 72, therefore the arithmetic mean between 66 and 78 is 72.

2. 32, __, __, __, 68. Find the arithmetic means between 32 and 68.
an = a1 + d (n – 1) by substituting the values, we get
68 = 32 + d (5-1) d is unknown because there is no second term
68 = 32 + d (4)
68 = 32 + 4d
68-32 = 4d transpose 66 to the left side and change the sign
36 = 4d
36 4𝑑𝑑
4
= 4
divide both sides by 4 to remain d

d=9
Since the common difference is known, add the first term by the difference to get the next term.
32 + 9 = 41 2nd term 41 + 9 = 50 3rd term 50 + 9 = 59 4th term
*the arithmetic means between 32 and 68 are 41, 50 and 59.
