Research Framework Siti Nur Farhanis Dialysate Effluent

The student is preparing a slow-release polyacrylic acid (PAA) hydrogel for use as a dialysate effluent fertilizer. Dialysate effluent is produced during dialysis treatment and contains nutrients but is often discharged into sewers. The student will prepare PAA hydrogels with varying concentrations of the crosslinker N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide and determine the effect on water absorption and nutrient release rate. The objectives are to determine the nutrient release rate at different crosslinker concentrations and the effect on water absorption. This will reduce environmental waste from dialysis effluent discharge.

Project Title:

Preparation and Properties of Slow-Release PAA for Dialysate Effluent Fertilizer: Effect of
Crosslinker concentration

Research Overview and Problem Statement:

Research Overview: Dialysis wastes refers to waste that were in contact with the blood of patients
undergoing dialysis that produce dialysate effluent including contaminated disposable equipment and
supplies such as tubing, filters, disposable sheets, towels, gloves, aprons, and laboratory coats. One
of the main environmental causes by effluents is their discharge to the sewer system. This issue
usually affects cities without sewer treatment facilities. The wastewater generated from dialysis has
a significant impact on the environment due to its high salinity, turbidity, and chemical oxygen
demand. Dialysate effluent is useful due to the abundant nutrient contents in the dialysate effluent
such as glucose, sodium, and albumin. By using the dialysate waste and convert it into something
useful such as dialysate effluent fertilizer, the wastewater and other environmental concerns can be
reduced.

Problem statement: Despite the nutrient content in the dialysate effluent, most of the effluent is
discharged into the sewer system which could lead to clogging, and direct discharge into aquatic
habitats is a concern because of the potentially ecotoxic impact. Therefore, the preparation and
properties of Slow-Release PAA for dialysate effluent fertilizer are studied to reduce the
environmental waste.

Objectives (Please provide only two objectives):

• To determine the release rate of dialysate effluence nutrient at different crosslinker

concentration.
• To determine the effect of different crosslinker concentration on water absorption.

Scope of Research

The dialysate effluence fertilizer is prepared by using a synthetic dialysate effluent and hydrogel. The
effect on water absorption and the release rate of dialysate effluence nutrient at different crosslinker
concentration is to be determined.
