AGREEMENT

-Ms. Gimarie Ann delos Reyes

Recognizing the correct
Subject-Verb Agreement

The word or group of words being

talked about in a sentence is called the
subject. A subject can either be a noun or
pronoun. In a sentence, the subject and verb
should always agree in number.

3. Each are responsible.
4. Mathematics are my favorite subject.
5. The children is waiting outside the office.
Subject-Verb Agreement
1. The main rule is that if the subject of the sentence
is singular, the verb should be singular. If the
subject is plural, the verb should also be plural.

Examples:
Lumawen is the main character in the story.
The natives gather near the sea to sell their
products.
Subject-Verb Agreement
2. A phrase or clause between subject and verb
does not change the number of the subject.

Examples:

trains the townspeople.
The lady with six cats lives in the next house.

3. Singular indefinite pronouns such as anyone,
everybody, anybody, someone, somebody, no one, and
everyone take a singular verb. Meanwhile, plural
indefinite pronouns such as many, few, several, all take
a plural verb.

Examples:

All were required to learn kali
Subject-Verb Agreement
4. Inverted subjects must agree with the verb.

Examples:

to his fellowmen.
There are five pens in this box.
Subject-Verb Agreement
5. Collective nouns (group, jury, crowd, team, etc.)
may be singular or plural, depending on the meaning.

Examples:
The group of men agrees that they need to learn kali.
(the group does the action as one)
A group of men were arguing with each other.
(the group does the action separately)
Subject-Verb Agreement
6. Compound subjects (nouns joined by conjunction and)
are plural. However, when the words connected by and
refer to one and the same person or to things that always
go together, they are regarded as singular.

Examples:
The laws and the issues were discussed.
The umalohokan and trainer is respected by the people.
(refers to same person)
Subject-Verb Agreement
7. If the compound subjects joined by or or nor are
both singular, the -s form of the verb is used. If the
subjects are both plural, then the base form of the
verb is used.

Examples:
Neither the datu nor Lumawen likes conflict.
Laws or conflicts concern the datu.
Subject-Verb Agreement
8. If the compound subjects joined by or or nor differ
in number, the verb follows the subject closer to it.

Examples:
Either the men or the child learns kali first.
Neither the law nor the problems make the people
angry.
Subject-Verb Agreement
9. Titles of single entities (e.g., books, organizations,
countries) are always singular.

Examples:
“The Kali Masters” teaches how to do the traditional
martial art.
Philippines is a promising country.
Subject-Verb Agreement
10. Plural-form nouns with a singular meaning (e.g.,
news, measles, mumps, physics) take the -s form of
the verb.

Examples:
The news about the laws is delivered by Lumawen.
