Problem Set 1

The document discusses density and pressure problems: 1) It calculates the mass of gold and volumes of gold and copper in a British gold coin, finding the coin's density is 17751.11 kg/m3. 2) It determines the weight of a car from the tire pressure and area, finding the total force and weight to be 8.33 x 106 N. 3) It explains that an egg floats in salty water rather than sinking in plain water because adding salt increases the density of the solution, allowing it to match the egg's density through increased mass without changed volume.

DENSITY AND PRESSURE

Part I.
Instructions: Solve the following problems completely and present your final answers
in two (2) decimal places.

1. The British gold sovereign coin is an alloy of gold and copper having a total
mass of 7.988 𝒈, and is 22 𝒌𝒂𝒓𝒂𝒕 gold.
a. Find the mass of gold in the sovereign in kilograms using the fact that the
𝒎𝒂𝒔𝒔𝒈𝒐𝒍𝒅
𝒏𝒖𝒎𝒃𝒆𝒓 𝒐𝒇 𝒌𝒂𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒔 = 𝟐𝟒 × 𝒕𝒐𝒕𝒂𝒍 𝒎𝒂𝒔𝒔

𝑛𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑘𝑎𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑠 × 𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠

𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠𝑔𝑜𝑙𝑑 = 24

22 × 7.988 × 10−3 𝑘𝑔
= 24

= 𝟕. 𝟑𝟐 × 𝟏𝟎−𝟑 𝒌𝒈

b. Calculate the volumes of gold and copper, respectively, used to

manufacture the coin.
𝒎𝒂𝒔𝒔𝒈𝒐𝒍𝒅 𝒎𝒂𝒔𝒔𝒄𝒐𝒑𝒑𝒆𝒓
𝑽𝒈𝒐𝒍𝒅 = 𝑽𝒄𝒐𝒑𝒑𝒆𝒓 =

= 𝟎. 𝟑𝟖 𝐜𝐦𝟑 𝐨𝐫 𝟑. 𝟖 × 𝟏𝟎−𝟕 𝐦𝟑 = 𝟎. 𝟎𝟕 𝐜𝐦𝟑 𝐨𝐫 𝟎. 𝟕 × 𝟏𝟎−𝟕 𝐦𝟑

c. Calculate the density of the British sovereign coin.

7.988 × 10−3 𝑘𝑔
= 3.8 × 10−7 𝑚3 + 0.7× 10−7 𝑚3

2. The four tires of an automobile are inflated to a gauge pressure of
𝟐. 𝟎 × 𝟏𝟎𝟓 𝑷𝒂. Each tire has an area of 𝟎. 𝟎𝟐𝟒 𝒎𝟐 in contact with the ground.
Determine the weight of the automobile.
𝑃

2.0 × 105 𝑃𝑎

Part II.
Instruction: Based on your understanding of density, answer the following question
briefly but concise.

1. How has the egg (see figure below) been suspended in the clear liquid?

- Using a tap water while putting the egg will

just sink to the bottom because the density of
the egg is higher than the density of tap water
that is why it sinks. However, once you add
the right amount of salt to the water, the egg
will float. Thus, adding salt to the water
increases the density of the solution since the
salt increases the mass without changing the
volume.
