WHAT IS ‘BODY LANGUAGE’?
How often have you heard the phrase "words speak louder than actions"? It is true that language
has always played a significant role in human communication, but this is not always the case.
The importance of body language in communicating has long been acknowledged. The value of
our nonverbal communication outweighs that of spoken language. Body language tells us more
about a person's thoughts than their voice or even their words ever could. The most effective
method of communicating is body language. Body language is a form of nonverbal
communication that consists of our posture, gestures, and movements. It's equally as important
as verbal communication, yet we typically overlook it while we're speaking or giving a
presentation.
WHY BODY LANGUAGE IS IMPORTANT?
Now, all of us are aware that body language is crucial for effective daily communication.
According to Wang (2009), every feature of body language has a unique effect on interpersonal
communication. Every human being uses body language while communicating with others.
Body language demonstrates our level of confidence in the workplace, which has an effect on
our personal brand. It helps us interpret and decode what the speaker is saying. This type of
nonverbal communication affects presentations in a positive way to the tune of fifty-five percent.
Our body language includes some clues and messages that are nonverbal. For instance, gesture,
posture, tone of voice, and facial expression these cues are crucial for effective communication
because they enable us to read the feelings and moods of others. Additionally, it improves our
awareness of how people respond to what we say and how we say it. Although body language is
a highly effective communication tool, it should always be utilized with great care. Sometimes,
our entire effort might be ruined by body language since different people express themselves
through various body language. If our body language is not proper, we might lose some of life’s
finest opportunities. There are several types of body language, including gestures, posture, tone
of voice, and facial expression. These are seen as important cues and signals for interpersonal
communication, and the symbols and questions they represent which helps us to interact.
Facial Expression
Because human faces are so expressive, they may indicate a wide range of emotions without
using words. Face is the mirror of the mind, and facial expressions are frequently regarded to
reveal the meaning of a communication. We commonly use our facial expressions to convey six
main emotions: pleasure, sorrow, fear, anger, surprise, and contempt.
Tone of Voice
To interact with others, voice is essential. The audience is drawn in by the incredible human
factor. Voice modulation is crucial for effective communication since it helps make a voice clear
and audible. The process of altering voice volume is known as voice modulation. Pace, or how
quickly something or someone moves, is the following. Our voices shouldn't be very rapid or
sluggish when speaking to others. The next one is the pause, which is a brief interval during
which someone ceases talking or acting in any way. A speaker's ability to get the audience's
attention is greatly enhanced by this technique. Power is the next essential component for voice.
The loudness of our voice affects power. The capacity to match our loudness fluctuations with
emotional content is another aspect of it. The final factor is pronunciation, which refers to how a
specific person says a language's words. It is said to be an art to pronounce words correctly in
any language. A key component of effective communication is proper pronunciation.
Eye Contact
Since the visual sense is the most prevalent in most individuals, eye contact is a crucial
component of nonverbal communication. By maintaining eye contact, we can convey animosity,
curiosity, or attraction. In order to keep the conversation moving, eye contact is crucial.
Posture
Posture refers to how a person stand, sit, or move generally with their shoulders, neck, and back
held in a certain way. We should stand straight while speaking or communicating with people.
We shall stand or sit in a position that evenly distributes our body weight and allows us to stand
for extended periods of time without experiencing any strain. A decent posture and a nice look
are both effective preventative measures. Pose, assurance, and dignity are all shown by someone
with good posture.
Gesture
Gesture is the expression of an idea or emotion through the movement of the hands, arms, or
head. Our communication becomes more dynamic, vivid, and engaging to the listener when we
combine our face expression with the usage of our hands, arms, and heads. Gestures are a type of
expressive system that make our messages clearer and more profound.
POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE BODY LANGUAGE
Body language reveals a lot. Half of a speaker's emotions are communicated through body
language. In order to properly communicate with others, we must be able to read the speaker's
body language and look beyond what we are told to hear. It is also advantageous to be aware of
the body language signals we employ to interact with others and how they might affect our
professional relationships. Body language can be split into two categories. There are two
possible approaches. The strategy might be positive or negative. Negative gestures may not be
made on purpose by the speaker, but they may still occur if the speaker is not acknowledged.
This is why it's essential to comprehend both good and negative body language.
Positive Body Language
1. A person who extends their hands in greeting can be interpreted as being transparent and
sincere in their interactions with others. This gesture can be performed to emphasize how
significant what is being communicated is or just to indicate someone's approachability and
willingness to engage in discussion with others.
2. When someone stands up straight, it conveys self-assurance and conviction in oneself. For
example, if you stand up straight, people will assume you are informed and capable in your
position. They could view you as more accessible overall and be more at ease approaching you
for help. Maintaining a straight posture while being composed and staring squarely at the person
you are speaking with demonstrates your confidence and respect for them.
3. Eye contact that is both confident and trustworthy can be used to promote open dialogue. A
frequent use of eye contact during a discussion is an indication of sincerity. For instance, you
may also show that you're willing to hear what the other person has to say by taking your turn.
To show respect and that you are not a danger, it is important to sometimes break eye contact
throughout a conversation.
4. While someone is speaking, nodding demonstrates your attention to what they are saying and
our admiration for them. It can imply that we concur with what they are saying or just that we
recognize the value of their ideas or perspectives. For example, if you disagree with what they
say, tilting our head to the side demonstrates that you are respectfully listening and
contemplating what they have to say. During talks, nodding and tilting the head are courteous
and pleasant body language cues that show openness and approachability.
5. A smile conveys friendliness, openness, approachability, and likeability to the other person.
Additionally, smiling at someone demonstrates our admiration and respect for them and will
improve our interpersonal and business ties. For example, a smile might show that you are
paying attention to what they have to say, which may encourage friends or coworkers to feel
more at ease discussing their thoughts with you. After all the smile must be sincere and not seem
forced or terrified.
