3 Waste Segregation

This document discusses waste segregation and recycling. It defines waste segregation as dividing garbage into different categories like wet, dry, sanitary and hazardous waste. It defines recycling as producing new products from used materials to reduce solid waste. The document lists the benefits of recycling like reducing landfill waste, conserving resources and reducing pollution. It explains the steps of recycling which includes collection, processing, manufacturing and purchasing recycled products. It provides examples of common recycled products and closes by assigning students a project to create a recycled product and present it in class.

What is

Waste Segregation?
- process of dividing garbage
and waste products in an effort
to reduce, reuse and recycle
materials.
4 Types of Garbage
• Wet waste
• Sanitary waste
• Dry waste
• Hazardous waste

What is RECYCLING?
Recycling can be defined as the
production of new products or
materials from used materials
or scrap. Recycling is a key
strategy in the reduction of
solid waste.
Benefits of RECYCLING?
Reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills and
incinerators;

Conserves natural resources such as timber,

water, and minerals;

Prevents pollution caused by reducing the need

to collect new raw materials;
Saves energy;

Reduces greenhouse gas emissions

that contribute to global climate
change;

Helps sustain the environment for

future generations;

Helps create new well-paying jobs in

the recycling and manufacturing
industries in the country.
Steps of Recycling
1. Collection and Processing
There are several methods for collecting
recyclables, including curb side collection,
drop-off centers, and deposit or refund
programs. After collection, recyclables are
sent to a recovery facility to be sorted,
cleaned, and processed into materials that
can be used in manufacturing.
Steps of Recycling
2. Manufacturing
Common household items that contain recycled
materials include:
- newspapers and paper towels;
- aluminum and plastic;
- glass soft drink containers;
- steel cans; and
- plastic laundry detergent bottles
Recycled materials are also used in new ways such as
recovered glass in asphalt to pave roads or recovered
plastic in carpeting and park benches.
Steps of Recycling
3. Purchasing new products made
from recycled materials
By buying new products made from recycled
materials you help close the recycling loop.
There are thousands of products that contain
recycled content. When you go shopping, look
for:
- Products that can be easily recycled, and
- Products that contain recycled content.
Get ¼ sheet of paper, and identify the following
if it is a wet waste, dry waste, sanitary waste or
hazardous waste:
1. Light bulb
2. Thermometer
3. Gift wrapper
4. Milk can
5. Baby diaper
6. Coconut husk
7. Cotton
8. Plastic bottle
9. Watermelon
10.Cooking Oil

4. Milk can - dry
5. Baby diaper - sanitary
6. Coconut husk - wet
7. Cotton - sanitary
8. Plastic bottle - dry
9. Watermelon - wet
10. Cooking Oil - wet
Assignment/Pre-final Exam
1. Form a group maximum of 5 members.
2. Create a recycled product (2 pieces) that can be used
in school.
3. On Pre-final day, present the product that you have
created and discuss the following:
a) Purpose of the product;
b) Usage; and
c) Cost.
4. Your grade will be recorded as your pre-final exam.
