Climate Exercise

This document discusses the documentary "Chasing Ice" and asks students to watch it and answer questions. It provides a link to watch the documentary online for free. Some of the questions ask students to describe the background of the filmmaker James Balog and his Extreme Ice Survey project, ways that climate change is researched through observing ice, findings from the Extreme Ice Survey that showed ice features melting much more rapidly than expected, and the potential human consequences of rapid ice melting in the coming decades.

Chasing Ice Exercise

As we examine the changing climate this week in class, I would like you to watch the
documentary Chasing Ice.  This is a great film that provides outstanding visual evidence of our
melting world.  It is available free at the following website:

Chasing Ice Watch online full movie - Documentary Mania

As you watch and listen, complete the following questions:

1. Describe James Balog’s background and how he began the Extreme Ice Survey.
He began the Extreme Ice Survey because he was a photographer that was taking pictures of
glaciers for National Geographic and the New Yorker and noticing an extreme change in the
years as he photographed them.
2. Besides Balog’s approach, describe other ways to research climate change that focus on
ice.
Another way to research climate change is by using calving, which is when segments of ice
sheets separate and fall off into the ocean water. It shows how rapidly ice is being diminished
into the ocean at an alarming rate
3. Summarize the findings from the Extreme Ice Survey.
EIS found that glacier features that took centuries to form and should have lasted for a very long
time were melting in a manner of a couple weeks or months to a couple years.
4. Describe what you found most surprising or interesting from the film.
I found it interesting just how rapidly our ice caps are melting, I knew they were but didn't
realize how fast it was actually happening.
5. What are the human consequences of rapidly melting ice that will occur in the next 50
years?
The rapid melting of the ice is a problem that can lead to further climate change that can be
detrimental to not only humans, but animals, the weather, crops, other plants, and our commerce.

6. Do some research and see what has Balog been doing the past few years since Chasing
Ice was completed.
Balog has become a spokesperson for climate change and does so around the world. He aims to raise
awareness and inform people that climate change is real and we need to take measures to reduce our
contribution to it and it's effects on our world.

7. Describe two events that have occurred in the past couple of months that are related to
the changing climate.
https://unfccc.int/news/united-in-science-we-are-heading-in-the-wrong-direction
describes the data given by the United Nations Climate Change from September of 2022
describing that we are going in the wrong direction that the temperatures on average are rising
and that our socioeconomics are taking a hit as well.
