Direct Variation Semi Detailed Lesson Plan

This lesson plan aims to teach learners about direct variation. It includes objectives, content, learning tasks, examples and an evaluation. The learning tasks involve translating relationships into variation statements, plotting graphs, solving problems, and group activities to find constants of variation and equations. Examples demonstrate finding constants from graphs or given points. The plan evaluates learners' understanding and the teacher reflects on strategies, difficulties, and innovations.

Semi-Detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics 9

Content Standards:
The learners demonstrate an understanding of key variation and
radicals.
Performance Standards:
The learners shall be able to formulate and solve accurately involving
variation and radicals.
Learning Competency and code: (M9AL-IIa-b-1)
a. Translates into variation statement a relationship between two
quantities given by: (a) a table of values; (b) a mathematical
equation; (c) a graph, and vice versa.
Quarter: SECOND Week:2 Day: 3(NOVEMBER 9, 2022)
I. Objectives
At the end of 60 minutes, 80% of the learners are expected to:
1. Translate into variation statement a relationship involving direct
variation between two quantities given by a graph and vice versa.
2. Find the unknown in a direct variation equation.
3. Appreciate the concept of direct variation in real-life situation.
II. Content
Subject Matter: Direct Variation
Integration: (Learning area): Science
Strategies: Think – Pair Share, collaborative
Materials: Ppt, Laptop, TV, board, chalk, worksheets, manila paper, marker.
References: SHS Precalculus textbook, internet link
III. Learning Tasks:

A. Elicit (8min.)
Recall: Some linear equations are also examples of direct variation.
Direct variation written y=kx read as “y varies directly as x”
k −is the constant of variation
y
k=
x

Activity 1: Translate Me! (Think-pair-share)

Translate each statement into an equation. Answer Key:
1. A = kh
1. The area A of a triangle is proportional to its height h.
2. W= km
2. The weight W of an object is directly proportional to its mass m.
3. The cost C of fish varies directly as its weight w in kilograms. 3. C = kw
4. The volume V of a cylinder varies directly as its height h. 4. V = kh
5. D = ks

1
5. The distance D travelled by a car varies directly as its speed s.
B. Engage (5 min)
With the same partner, answer activity 2.

Activity 2: Plot Me!

Draw the graph of the given set of ordered pairs. Plot it on one cartesian plane.
Label the x values as time t and y values as distance d.

r = { (1,10), (2,20), (3,30), (4,40), (5,50)}

C. Explore (5min)
The teacher will post questions to the students based on the activity.
1. Based on the graph, does it show a direct variation?
2. What is the constant of variation?
3. What is the equation of variation?
D. Explain (10min)
Show to the class some illustrative examples for deeper understanding of the lesson.
Example 1:
Using the graph below, find the constant k of variation and the equation which
describes the relation.

475
Cost of tilapia (c)

380

285

190
95

0 1 2 3 4 5 6
Weight of tilapia in kg (w)

If the cost of tilapia c varies directly as its weight w, then the relationship can be translated
into mathematical statement c = kw.
Using one of the points on the graph (2,190) solve for the constant of variation.
y c
k = → k=
x w

2
190
k=
2
k =95
Therefore, the constant of variation is 95. Then substitute k =95 into c = kw, we have c =
95w.
Example 2:
It is known that y varies directly as x and y = 32 and x = 4, find the constant of
variation and its equation.
Solution:
To express the statement y varies directly as x, we write y = kx. Therefore, by
substituting the given values in the derived equation, we have
32=k ( 4 )
k =8 ( MPE )
The constant of variation is 8 and the equation of variation is y=8 x .
Example 3:
If x varies directly as the square of y, and x = 2 when y =1, find the constant of
variation and the value of x when y=3.
Solution: Write the equation and substitute the given values.
2
x=k y
2= ( k ) ( 12)
2=k
solve for x when y =3
2

Group Activity:
Given the materials, each group will answer the assigned problems and will explain
afterwards. (Gallery Walk)
