2 INSTALLATION TECHNIQUES
Identify the type of structure where the ceramic tiles will be installed,
whether the surface will be on the floor or the wall, and also the shape and
size of the surface. Such information will be important factors in deter-
mining the size of the ceramic tiles, and the installation techniques which
will be used. It will also be important for figuring out whether an open joint
system (with a grout width of over 3mm) or close joint (with a grout width

less than 3mm) will be needed.

The installation of ceramics with an open joint system of (grout width of

over 3mm) is more advantageous, for the following reasons:

a. The ability to tolerate the possibility of differences in the size of ce-

ramics, especially for ceramic tiles with lower priority glazing.
b. Less flexible joint is needed, especially if the chosen grout filler is one
which is more elastic.
c. Easier filling of the grout lines.

INSTALLATION METHODS
Selection of installation methods and materials as the foundation of the
installation:

a. Wet installation: For wet installation methods, the base materials

(foundation) used for installation are sand and cement. This method is
not suitable for ceramic tiles with high degrees of porosity.
b. Dry installation: The material used is a special additive which makes
it a stronger binder. This method is suitable for ceramic tiles with low
degrees of porosity.

4 BENEFITS OF CERAMIC TILE

Environmentally friendly – Ceramic tiles are made from raw materials, including clay, and sand.
These materials are combined with other recycled materials to form ceramic tile. Many ceramic
tiles are made from recyclable content. Ceramic tile can also help to reduce your energy use (and

Low maintenance – Ceramic tiles are easy to maintain, from simple cleaning to optional sealing

Repairable – Got a crack? Make sure to keep a few extra tiles around in the event of a crack. You
can attempt to replace the tile yourself or find a handyman or tile contractor to do it for you.
