Leonardo Da Vinci was an Italian artist who dabbled in lots of subjects


and who especially enjoyed painting. His most famous pieces of art
include the portrait of Mona Lisa and the Last Supper painting.

EARLY LIFE

★ Leonardo was born on April 15, 1452 in Vinci, Italy.


★ He displayed great artistic talent from the age of 5, and impressed
many people with his drawings, paintings, and his creativity in
general.

★ He lived in his mother’s home in
Anchiano for the first five years of
his childhood.
★ Beginning in 1457, he lived in Vinci
with his father, who was a wealthy
notary.
★ He lived during the Italian
Renaissance, which was a period of
Leonardo’s childhood home in
cultural change, where the times Anchiano
changed from Medieval to Early
Modern Europe.

APPRENTICE TO ANDREA DEL VERROCCHIO

★ When he was 14, Leonardo became


an apprentice to a famous artist
named Andrea del Verrocchio.
★ He impressed del Verrocchio with his
talent, and it was even said that
Leonardo created and developed his
own paints.
★ When he was an apprentice, Leonardo
learned a lot about drawing, painting,
and other art forms, and also about
metalworking, plaster casting, leather
working, and much more.
★ Leonardo kept lots of journals of his
“The Baptism of Christ”
by Verrocchio and da Vinci sketches - some of which included
mock-ups of machines, anatomy,
instruments, and pieces of
architecture.

★ Although Leonardo was accepted into the painter’s guild in
Florence in 1472, he continued to apprentice with del
Verrocchio because he admired him and his talent so much.

★ Leonardo was also interested in the human body, and became an


expert in its anatomy. As a result, he drew hundreds of pictures to
explain his thoughts about the subject.

★ He drew The Vitruvian Man, which was meant to represent the


connection between proportions of the human body and geometry.

★ One of his most famous paintings, The Last Supper, was completed in
1498, and depicts Jesus and his disciples before his capture and death.
It is said to depict the moment Jesus predicted that one of his disciples
would betray him, and the reaction it sparked.

★ Perhaps his most famous painting, The Mona Lisa, shows a woman
looking out at the viewer with a controversial, and much discussed,
smile on her face. Her facial expressions have been interpreted
differently by many people for hundreds of years.

★ Flying was something Leonardo took an avid interest in, and he often
sketched mock-ups of helicopters and hang-gliders.

★ In his journals, there is evidence that he enjoyed drawing inventions -


some of which were practical, and some that were not.

★ During his life, Leonardo was highly valued as a civil engineer. He even
drew out a system of moveable barricades to protect Venice from
attack during the Second Italian War of 1499.

★ In his later years, Leonardo lived at the Vatican.

★ Raphael and Michelangelo, two other famous artists, were working at


the Vatican at that time as well.
★ Leonardo Da Vinci died on May 2, 1519.
★ It has been said that the King of France actually held Leonardo in his
arms when he died; although some people think this is just a made-up
story.
★ Today, Leonardo is known around the world as a famous painter, but
also as one of the most multi-talented individuals who ever lived.
