1. What are the difference between Emphatic Listening and Selective Listening?
There is a big difference between emphatic listening and Selective Listening. In Emphatic listening, you
listen to understand the other's perspective, Using this type of listening, you can try to understand
someone else’s point of view as they’re speaking. You can also try to imagine yourself in the other
person’s shoes. On the other side, Selective listening, from the word itself "select" it means that we only
tend to listen to the specific sound because we have chosen it. It is also called biased listening.
3. Explain the meaning of Indexing and Appreciating as Part of the listening process
Indexing this is Outlining or ranking the information according to the importance of each information. It
is search for search for main and supporting ideas and the structuring bits and pieces into more
meaningful words. The Indexing is one of the important parts of the listening process. Because, the
Indexing is performing to ranking or outling the information according to the importance of information
that have. And the Appreciating is acting to give value of all informations that we have or we heard.
4. How does the three types of noise interfere with Communication? Give examples of each and explain.
Noises such as External noise, Internal noise and Semantic Noise are considered as a barrier on effective
listening. It is because it hinders the speaker on transportation of the thoughts he wants to express to
whoever are listening. External noises are the noises from the environment, for instance, people loudly
talking simultaneously, loud music, vehicle's engines, etc. Internal noises are the noises inside ourselves
such as, thoughts, anger, excitement, etc. Lastly, Semantic noises are the noises that exist within the
speaker. It serves as a disturbance on delivering the message well that interferes with the interpretation of
the message due to the ambiguity in words, sentences or symbols used.
5. Identify the meaning elements of Speech Communication and explain their importance/ role in the
Communicative Process
a. Participant - refers to the the communicators who are both senders and receivers as senders they
encode or transform their thought and feelings into messages through verbal symbols and nonverbal
behavior as receivers they decode or process the received messages and behavior and react to them.

b. Context - it refers to the interrelated conditions of communication. It consists of such factors as:
Physical Milieu, Social Milieu, Psychological Milieu, Cultural Milieu, Historical Milieu. The importance of
context is to provides meaning and clarity to the intended message.
c. Channel - it refers to the means of accessing the messages whether via visual channel (which refers to
ligh-the light waves that carry the nonverbal symbols such as facial expressions, gestures and
movements) or via the auditory channel (which refers to sound- the sound waves that carry the verbal
symbols such as words and vocal cues like tone, rate, pitch, volume). The role of channel is to access the
messages from those who give information, maybe message via nonverbal symbols like facial
expressions, gestures and movements or maybe from the verbal symbols such as words or sounds, tone,
rate, pitch and volume. The channel is a method used to communicate as well as specific tools we use in
communicate process. Channel is it important to receive a different informations and to interpret all
informations received.
d. Message - it refers to the meanings or ideas that are encoded and sent by means of verbal and
nonverbal symbols then receives ans decoded into one’s own ideas and feelings. Message is one of most
important to all elements of speech. In addition, the importance of message to get information from the
sender. Message is very important to communicate other easily, once the sender done to give a
message, the receiver start to give action about message that her or he received.
e. Noise – means distractions that interfere with the accurate transmission and reception of a message.
The noise is a distraction. The role of noise is to distract to those individuals talking.
