SIMPLE PAST TENSE

Regular and irregular verbs


SIMPLE PAST USES
The simple past tense is a verb tense which is used to talk about:

- A completed Action in the Past I saw a movie yesterday

- A Series of Completed Actions

I finished work, walked to the beach, and found a nice place to swim.

-Duration in the Past I lived in Brazil for two years.

- Habits in the Past I studied French when I was a child.


SIMPLE PAST TENSE - REGULAR VERBS
Spelling rules Examples
Base form + ed Walk + ed = walked
Play +ed = played

Verbs ending in -e + d Like + d = liked


Move + d = moved

Verbs ending in a consonant + y Carry = carried


Change y = i + ed Study = studied

Some verbs ending in a single Plan = planned

SIMPLE PAST TENSE IRREGULAR VERBS
An irregular verb is one that does not form its simple past tense by adding "-ed" or "-d" to the base form.
