HOW THE POLL WAS CONDUCTED AND THE
MARGIN OF ERROR CALCULATED
This CBS News/YouGov survey was conducted with a statewide representative sample of 1,194
U.S. registered voters in Pennsylvania interviewed between September 6–12, 2022.
The sample was weighted to be representative of adults statewide according to gender, age, race,
education and geographic region based on the U.S. Census Current Population Survey, as well as
to 2020 presidential vote. Of the 1,194 respondents, 1,139 were selected from YouGov’s online
panel, and 55 were selected from Prodege’s online panel. The weights range from 0.05 to 5.6,
with a mean of 1 and a standard deviation of 0.9.
The margin of error (a 95% confidence interval) for a sample percentage p based upon the entire
sample is approximately 3.8%. It is calculated using the formula
s
1 + CV2
p̂ ± 100 ×
n
where CV is the coefficient of variation of the sample weights and n is the sample size used
to compute the proportion. This is a measure of sampling error (the average of all estimates
obtained using the same sample selection and weighting procedures repeatedly). The sample
estimate should differ from its expected value by less than margin of error in 95 percent of
all samples. It does not reflect non-sampling errors, including potential selection bias in panel
participation or in response to a particular survey.
