This document discusses different types of tournament structures for ball games and sports: single elimination, double elimination, and round robin. Single elimination is the simplest format where competitors are eliminated after one loss. Double elimination allows competitors a second loss before being eliminated. Round robin involves all competitors playing each other to determine an overall winner based on number of wins. The number of games needed is calculated based on the type of tournament and number of participating teams or individuals. Details like seeding and byes are also addressed.

Topic: Types of Tournament Elimination

DEBESMSCAT, College of Educationǀ PE 3- Ball Games/Sports 1

Tournament Elimination is used to identify the winner in such a specific game/ sport. Eliminating
a competitor is based on his wins and loses in the game. In creating a schedule of a game, there
are many factors to consider like the number of participants and the scheduled time for the event.

Any successful program of athletic meets and other activities demands much more than
the mere announcement of the coming events, the acceptance of entries, the selection of officials,
and the scheduling procedure. A program will rise above sub mediocrity to far greater significance
when attention is paid to details and the mechanical aspects of the competition. Just as
interschool competitions take an added luster with the introduction of ceremonies and colors, so
would athletic meets have distinction and appeal with a bit of planning and thoughtfulness. Little
details need not be expensive or elaborate nor be designed such as to attract nationwide
attention. Rather, it is matter of individual ingenuity and inventiveness on the part of the athletic
director to conceive of and provide the little devices and aids to make competitions more enjoyable
and attractive.

Types of Competition / Tournament

There are numerous ways where a team or individual can compete with one another.
In the selection of the type of competition or tournament the major considerations are:

1. The type of activity

2. The number of competitors
3. Available space and time

1. The Single Elimination

• Is to be used when time is limited

• It is the easiest to organize
• And the quickest way to declare a winner.
• When the number of contestant exist in power of 2 (2; 4; 8; 16; and 32 are power of 2),
the first round of games presents no problem because it is easy to put them in brackets
• In case the number of participating teams is not in a power of 2, the first round should
have “byes”. A “bye” is assigned to one or more teams who do not play during the first
round, so it is a restfor the team. To determine the number of “byes” is to subtract
the number of players or teams from the next power of 2. In case of 5 teams, the
next power of 2 is 8. Ex. 8-5 = 3 byes
• Single elimination tournament is economical of time because winners continue to play
while losers drop out. This does not allow for maximum play. While it is true that it is
timesaver, the actual winner may not be the best because a very strong team may have
a bad day, and if it losses it is automatically out. Also, the second and third places may
not also be the second and third best, respectively.
• In single elimination it is always desirable to seed individuals and teams according to
their known strength, thus, avoiding early elimination of the stronger players because
of faulty draw. It is easy to determine the 3rd, 4th, 5thand 6thplaces following the finals
which decide the 1stand 2ndplaces. The 2 losing semi finalist play for 3rdand 4thplaces;
the 4 losing quarterfinalist play for 5thand 6thplaces.

Single Elimination Formula to Determine The Number of Games:

N = Number of teams or competitors

N –1 = No. of Games

Ex. 8 -1 = 7 games

2. Double Elimination
• To prevent outright elimination
• To provide additional competition
• No team is eliminated until it has had two (2) LOSSES
• Winners proceed to winner’s side and losers to the other side
• Should the winner in the first round elimination flight lose to a winner of the second
elimination flight, these two teams must play another game to the flight champion

Double Elimination Formula to Determine The Number of Games:

N = Number of competitors

(N-1) 2 = Number of Games

Ex. (5-1) 2 = Number of Games

(4) 2 = 8 games

3. The Round-Robin
• The most satisfactory method of organization, facilities and time permitting.
• It is generally used for team competition.
• It is the most popular because it provides an opportunity for each team to play other teams in
the competition.
• The winner is determined by the number of wins made in the round.
• It is not advisable for more than 8 teams because of the great deal of time involved.
• Losing a contest does not eliminate a contestant. It must outwinthe others, even not all of
them to win the contest.

Double Elimination Formula to Determine The Number of Games:

N = Number of Teams

𝑁 (𝑁 − 1)
2

Ex.
5 (5 − 1)
2

10 = Number of Games

Round Robin with Even Number of Teams

Round 1 Round 2 Round 3

1 vs 6 1 vs 5 1 vs 4
2 vs 5 6 vs 4 5 vs 3
3 vs 4 2 vs 3 6 vs 2

Round 4 Round 5
1 vs 3 1 vs 2
4 vs 2 3 vs 6
5 vs 6 4 vs 5

Round Robin with Odd Number of Teams

Round 1 Round 2 Round 3

5 4 3
4 vs 1 5 vs 3 4 vs 2
3 vs 2 1 vs 2 5 vs 1

Round 4 Round 5
2 1
3 vs 1 2 vs 5
4 vs 5 3 vs 4
