EXAMINATIONS, NOVEMBER 2019

SUBJECT: TURBO MACHINES [MME 3101]

REVISED CREDIT SYSTEM
Time: 3 Hours MAX. MARKS: 50

Instructions to Candidates:
 Answer ALL the questions.
 Missing data may be suitably assumed.
 Use of Thermodynamics data hand book is permitted.

1A. Obtain the expression for mass parameter and speed parameter for a 05
compressible flow turbo machine using dimensional analysis.
1B. The rotational speed of an impulse turbine is 3200 rpm and the mean blade 05
diameter is 0.8 m. The absolute velocity of fluid discharging through a nozzle
which is inclined at 200 to the plane of the rotor is 290 m/s. If the utilization
factor is 0.82 and relative velocity at the rotor exit is equal to that at the inlet.
Find the inlet and exit rotor angles. Also find the power output from the stage
for a mass flow rate of 2.1 kg/s and axial thrust on the shaft.

2A. Explain the concepts of reheat and preheat factors with the help of relevant 05
h – s plots.
2B. With the help of velocity triangles, prove that blade speed ratio of a 50% 05
reaction turbine with maximum utilization condition is equal to cos1 , where
 1 is the flow angle at the inlet.

3A. Derive an expression for stodola slip factor. Deduce the same for a radial 05
impeller.
3B. Determine the absolute Mach number of the flow at the exit of a radial bladed 05
impeller of a centrifugal compressor when the radial component of the
velocity at the impeller exit is 28 m/s and the slip factor is 0.9. The impeller tip
speed is 350 m/s. If the impeller tip area is 0.08m2 and the total-to-total
efficiency is 90%, determine the mass flow rate. Take stagnation conditions
at the inlet as 1 bar and 288 K.

4A. Draw the velocity triangles for an axial flow compressor. Indicate all the 05
velocity components on it. Derive the expression for degree of reaction for
the same in terms of exit blade angle and inlet flow angle.
4B. A Pelton Turbine produces 15 MW under a head of 300 m. The turbine speed 05
is 500 rpm. Assuming an overall efficiency of 84%, the coefficient of jet as

and assuming the deflection angle of the jet over the bucket as 165°,
compute the number of jets required and the diameter of each jet as well as
tangential force exerted by each jet on the bucket.

5A. Show that the pressure at the exit of the kaplan turbine is less than the 02
atmospheric pressure.
5B. An Inward flow reaction turbine is required to develop 3000 kW when 03
operating under a net head of 25 m at a specific speed of 300. Taking the
guide blade angle at full gate opening as 30°, the hydraulic efficiency and

0.6, blade thickness factor as 0.95, Compute RPM of the Turbine and
diameter of wheel at the inlet. Assume radial discharge at exit of the runner.
5C. Explain the need for compounding in steam turbines. Explain with neat 05
sketches (i) Velocity compounding, (ii) Pressure compounding
