LESSON 1
Matter (Characteristics of Matter)
Objectives:
1. Identify the states of matter.
2. Describe each set of matter.
3. Give examples of these states of matter
Learning Time!
What is matter?
Matter comes in different shapes and sizes. All the objects that you see are matter.
Objects have different characteristics. Matter is all around you. The books that you read, the
food that you eat, the toys that you play, the paper that you see outside, and the things that you
see inside your home are matter. Matter is everything that you see. The states of matter are,
solid, liquid and gas.
Matter is anything that occupies space and has mass. Space is where that object is
located or placed. Mass is the amount of matter an object has. It talks about how heavy or light
an object is. All objects that you see around you are matter.
There are three different states of matter.
SOLID
There are objects that can be touched as well as they can be held. These objects are
known as solids. A solid has a definite shape, size, and volume. It has its own shape and size. It
could also occupy space. Mass refers to the amount of matter an object contains.
Your favorite toys, notebooks and your appliances are some example of solid objects.
Almost all objects that you see around are solids.
LIQUID
There are some objects that could be touched but you cannot really keep them in your
hands. These are called liquids. A liquid does not have a definite shape. The shape of a liquid
will depend on the shape of its container.
If the container is round, the shape of the liquid is also round. If the shape of the
container is cylindrical, the shape of the liquid is also cylindrical. Liquid always follows the
shape of its container.
Liquid has its own volume that is why it could also occupy space. The space inside the
container is the space that a liquid occupies.
GAS
Gas has no definite shape and size but it has a definite volume. That means gas does not
have its own shape. Like a liquid, gas also follows the shape of its container. The size of gas
depends on the size of its container.
Some gases are not contained in a container. Air is an example of gas.
Air is also colorless. A moving air is called wind. The air inside the balloon is gas. The
air that you inhale is known as oxygen. The gas that comes out is called carbon dioxide.
Activity 1 (Classifying Matter)
Below are some examples of matter. Write each object to the column where it belongs.
air inside a balloon book rain
orange juice wind eraser
table toy robot oxygen

WRAP UP!
Matter is anything that occupies space and has mass.
Solid, liquid, and gas are states of matter.
A solid has a definite shape, size, and volume.
A liquid has no definite shape but has a definite volume.
A gas has no definite shape and size but has a definite volume.
Assignment!
Write 10 objects in each state of matter in the table below.
