I. Course Number: LIS 211
Course Title: Introduction to Library and Information Science
Credit Units: 3 units
No. of Hours/Week: 3 hours
Pre-requisite: None
II. Course Description: an overview of library and librarianship; historical development of libraries; types of libraries; library profession including Code of
Ethics for Filipino Librarians and RA 9246 and laws and issuances related to Philippine Librarianship. Introduction to librarianship provides the theoretical and
philosophical underpinnings of the profession with emphasis on its practice in the Philippines. The course focuses on the historical perspective and the philosophy
of librarianship.
III.General Objectives
At the end of the semester, the students should be able to:
National Goals: 1. develop his/her capability as a person;
2. develop his/her personal discipline, cultural, spiritual, and moral vigor as a person;
Regional Goals: 3. acquire entrepreneurial and technological skills for peace and economic posterity and alleviate poverty;
4. show consciousness and responsibility for environmental issues and concerns;
Institutional Goals: 5. develop critical awareness, understanding and appreciation of the impact of cultural, scientific, and technological advancement on
environmental and human values, attitudes and behavior to enable them to bridge more effectively the gap existing among cultural
communities in the region;

Subject Goals:
A. Terminal: At the end of the course, the students shall have acquired knowledge and understanding on the historical perspective of the philosophy of
libraries and librarianship and its status as a profession and inculcate the love of service, work, courtesy, honesty and other relevant values among them.
B. Enabling: At the end of the course the student shall have:
1. define and understand library terms;
2. understand the historical development and philosophical underpinnings of libraries and librarianship;
3. distinguish and appreciate the different types of libraries as to objectives, functions, collections, staff and services;
4. explain the organizational structure of the library;
5. discuss librarianship as a profession;
6. demonstrate love for library work;
7. understand the Code of Ethics for Filipino Librarians; and
8. Understand the RA 9246 and other laws and issuances related to the Philippine librarianship.
IV. Learning Outcomes
1. Compare and contrast various types of libraries high lighting the similarities and differences of their nature, structure, objectives, functions and
standards.
2. Analyze cases (based on ethical, professional and legal dimensions of librarianship) to identify solution and recommend professional qualities
of an individual to solve the problem.
