Session 15 : Broadening Compassion
MODULE ACTIVITIES
A. ESSAY WRITING. Answer the following questions truthfully.
1. Tell a personal experience in which you think you showed compassion for yourself.
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Since I am so selfless and have a tendency to put other people's feelings before my own, I can't
_____________________________________________________________________________________
remember of any instances in which I have been sympathetic toward myself. I may not feel sorry
_____________________________________________________________________________________
for myself because of how my parents raised me; I always received proper care, they always
_____________________________________________________________________________________
make sure to provide my needs as well as my wants sometimes. I am contented now, I sincerely
_____________________________________________________________________________________
hope that I never will reach that point.

2. Do you always feel compassionate for others? In what ways?
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Almost always, whenever I saw folks on the sidewalks or those who just happened to beg for
money next to me in a jeep, those who were affected by calamity, etc. I always felt sympathetic
_____________________________________________________________________________________
toward them. When I was in high school, I used to commute and take a jeepney on my way home
from class. There is a man who is blind in one eye who is constantly waiting for passengers to
_____________________________________________________________________________________
tip him. I always give him any extra change I have in my pocket until I left my hometown for
college.

Back then, we (high school friends) used to get together and join an organization called SYC.
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Through it, we volunteered every Saturday in a church that ran an outreach program for the
locals. With the help of our sponsors (Jollibee, Water Stations, the government, etc.), we ran
_____________________________________________________________________________________
seminars for adults, taught young kids the fundamentals of reading and writing, made games,
and of course provided lunches and snacks.
My high school friends and I have been doing something we call "Give Love" every year since
we were in high school. Instead of exchanging expensive presents at Christmas, we always make
packed meals that we give to a few homeless individuals. I was fortunate to be around by people
of this kind who share my compassion toward others.
3. Share one instance which you think you failed to show compassion to your brethren. What did you do?
What do you plan to do to correct that mistake?
_____________________________________________________________________________________
One of my cousins recently had an emergency operation to remove his gallbladder. Since it was
_____________________________________________________________________________________
an emergency, they do not have any funds to pay the hospital bill. I really do want to help, but
_____________________________________________________________________________________
that time, I was also out of money because I paid my tuition fee and I also paid half of our
_____________________________________________________________________________________
household bills. I really felt bad about it, I realized that I should try to save now, because we
_____________________________________________________________________________________
don’t know when there will be another emergency. Good thing, he understood and still thank
_____________________________________________________________________________________
me because my parents help him to pay his bills.
B. PICTURE ANALYSIS. What can you do to help these people around you?
These are the people I always encounter outside. I
often give food to them as much as possible and
few coins if I ran out of money, I wish I was
wealthy enough to help them start a new life.
My family always make sure to buy few
sampaguitas whenever we go to churches,
because it was the only way to help these people.
You will notice that they are really striving to live,
we all know that selling these items wouldn’t
provide enough food on their tables, but they still
tried.
I have a soft heart towards people with disability
because my father is also one of them, my dad
was a former president of a PWD association in
our city. I often join him whenever they conducted
a program for them that way, I can extend help.
As what I have said above, I really felt the need to
help people with disabilities, I make sure to treat
them right, because they are also human, we
need to show respect to these people as well, and
that’s what I always do aside from joining my
father to some programs for them.
You know I have soft heart as well to those people
in jail, because most of them are not bad, few are
innocent just like one of our family friends. His son
was convicted to the crime he didn’t do, he was
accused of murder, it’s not my story to tell but all
the evidence during the hearings failed to prove
that he is guilty of that crime, but we know how our
justice system works. I had this one time when his
mother invited me and my aunt to visit him inside,
we prepared foods for his co-inmates. I can’t
believe their situation is beyond humane, imagine
being lock up in a small cell with 70 other inmates,
it was pitiful, I hope that I could go back there
again to provide help or just feed some of them.
CLOSURE
Journal Writing: To be compassionate means…
_____________________________________________________________________________________
to be sympathetic to what other people feels, to be able to acknowledge and recognize their
_____________________________________________________________________________________
struggles in life. You know it is not about the material things or monetary gifts, most of them
_____________________________________________________________________________________
just need an ear to listen, a hand to help them, they just need someone to validate their feelings.
