Working with the
weight comparator

Installation instructions

During transport the load cell has to be secured with the

transport arrestment screws (17).
Don't over wind them.

Choose a suitable Installation site for your weight comparator, if

possible in a quiet and tempered room (max. ±0.5 Kelvin temperature
fluctuation), free of drafts and aggressive substances. The operators
should not move more than necessary during a measurement.

Avoid heat radiation e.g. due to direct sun light, lamps and other
heating sources. Otherwise the weighing chamber heats up like a "hot
house".

The relative humidity of the air should constantly amount to 40-70%.

Use adequate material against electrostatic Charge (flooring, seat

covering, suitable clothes of natural fibres, antistatic tools, etc.).

If necessary, install an electrical line with ground protection which

cannot be switched off.

Place your weight comparator on a suitable table (see "Accessories").

9
Operation

Before you Start weighing, read the following instructions. You'll avoid
operating errors which might lead to a damage of the load cell.

Please note the different settings of the balance operating program

(refer to the last pages of the English section).

After connection to line power, allow for >8 hours warmup.

Weight comparators require quiet and continuous work.

Pull out the power plug prior to connecting or disconnecting

peripherals.

Weights and scale shall stand together in the same room for some
time. For a highly precise weight determination it is indispensable that
the weights have ambient temperature.

Don 't change the position and mode of unavoidable interference

sources (e.g. lamps).

lf possible use long forceps or other adequate tools to reduce the

influence of body contact. An automatic pan loading convenience is of
advantage.

Make some test measurings before starting to weigh.

The more continuous the weighing process, the more accurate the
results. The display has to be stable before you can read an exact
value.

Open the weighing chamber only as long as required.

10
As a protection of the load cell the weight comparator features a
motor-driven pan loading convenience.

Please note: Before loading the reference or fest weight, the pan
has to be in the lift-up position, otherwise you'll damage the load
cell.

The position indicator (14) Signals the position of the pan.

Green label on top:

Pan is lifted, loading and unloading takes place without danger for the
load cell.

Red label on top:

Pan contacts the load cell, avoid manual loading and unloading.

11
Startup

Fasten the draft shield with the screws (18) as shown on the picture.

Take the screws out of the frame over the socket (5) on the rear panel
of the display head (7).

Slide the frame over the rubber insulation on the plug of the
connection cord.

12
Insert the plug in the socket and secure the plug in position with the
screws.

Slide the frame over the rubber insulation and secure the frame to the
housing with the help of the screws.

Place the pan support on cardan bearing (16) on the three rods of the
pan carrier in the weighing chamber.
Make sure it fits into the designated center holes.

13
Center the pan (2) on the surround of the pan support.

Remove the two protective caps of the transport arrestment screws

(17). Before operating the weight comparator remove the screws and
place them into the empty front holes.
The protective caps remain in the rear holes.

Level the weight comparator at the point of use by adjusting the

levelling screws (15) such that the bubble is centered in the circle of
the level indicator (3).

The pan must not touch the housing.

14
The weight comparator was set to 220 Volt at the factory.

Adaption to other line voltages:

Unscrew the cap at the bottom of the display head (7). Set the voltage
selector (11) to your local line voltage. Write the new voltage setting
on the manufacturer's label. When changing the voltage to 100/120 V,
you also have to change the built in fuse (4) T160 mA for the fuse
T315 mA included in the balance.

The fuse is screwed into the side of the display head.

100/120 V-T315mA, 220/240 V-T160mA

At the point of use plug the line cord (with the plug in place) into a
properly installed line outlet.

lf you have to use a line outlet that lacks the ground wire, make sure
you provide a ground on the power connection of the weight
comparator.

With the power switch (4) the weight comparator can be switched to
line power.

Position "0": dead

Position "1": energized.

Never switch the weight comparator off with the power switch.
Remember: A device that was completely switched off requires at
least 8 hours warmup.

15
Use the ON/OFF button (8) for switching on and off.

After connect in to line power, only the display will go off whenever
you switch the device off. The electronics circuits remain energized.
This feature lets you operate the weight comparator the moment you
switch it on, without having to wait for warmup.

After power-on a test of all essential electronic functions is

automatically run. Successful completion of the test is indicated by
"L" in the weight display.

16
Adjusting the
weight comparator

Please note also the instructions given in section: "Working with

the weight comparator" (from page 9 on).

Switch the weight comparator on as described in section "Startup"

(page 12).

Use the M-key (9) to lift the pan.

Tilt the draft shield (1) backward and place your 10 kg reference
weight on the center of the pan. Close the weighing chamber.

With smaller weights load also the corresponding tare expansion, so

that the sum again amounts to 10 kg.

Use the M-key to lower the pan plus the 10 kg reference weight.

Read the result only after the stability symbol "g" has appeared in the
display. Air turbulences may influence the measuring time.

Shortly push the tare bar (10), if the weight display (6) does not
read 0.0000 g.

17
Remove the protective cap at the left side of the display head and
shortly activate the CAL button.
The weight display reads "C".

lf "CE" appears, tare again. Press the CAL button when the display
reads 0.0000 g. Now the display will show "C".

Tilt the draft shield carefully backward and place your 50 g calibration
weight on top of the 10 kg reference weight.
Close the weighing chamber.

After approx. one minute the "C" flashes, shortly after 50.000 g
appears.
A beeper Signals the end of the calibration process.

Again use only the M-key to lift the part plus reference and 50 g
calibration weights. The display reads "L". Now remove the weights.

Again screw the protective cap to the display head.

18
Weighing

Please note the instructions given in section "Working with the

weight comparator" (from page 9 on).

Switch the weight comparator on as described in section "Startup"

(page 12).

lf necessary, adjust the device as described in the corresponding

section on page 17.

Weighing with the weight comparator is always comparative weighing.

In two operational Steps the known reference weight is compared with
the weight to be checked and the difference displayed with the correct
prefix.

1 st step.
lf necessary, activate the M-key. The green label of the position
indicator (14) has to be on top.

Tilt the draft shield (1) backward and center your reference weight on
the pan.
Close the weighing chamber.

Lower the pan (M-key).

After a short time, a weight result will appear in the display. Now zero
the display with the tare bar (10).

Observe the display during a few seconds and tare again if it does not
read 0.0000 g. lf the display is unstable, check again if you watched
the instructions given in section "Working with weight comparators".

19
2nd step.

Lift the pan plus the weight with the M-key.

Remove the reference weight from the pan.

Place the weight to be checked on the center of the pan and lower it
(M-key).

After a short time the display reads the difference of the two weights
with the correct prefix. Read the result when the display is stable.

Use the M-key to lift the pan plus the weight.

The device is ready for the next measuring.

lf you want to determine other than 10 kg weights proceed as

follows:

Example: 2 kg

lf necessary, do the adjustment of the weight comparator.

From the accessories case take the 5+3 kg tare discs and load them.

In addition place your reference weight or the weight to be checked.

The sum of reference or fest weight + tare expansion always has to

amount to 10 kg. The tare expansion remains on the pan during both
steps.

When weighing proceed as described previously.

20
Balance operating program

The balance operating program permits adaption of your weight

comparator to various ambient conditions at the point of use and to
different weighing requirements. At the factory, we have set the codes
for a Standard program which is protected by a locking function to
prevent accidental changes.

The "code" is the information carrier of the operating program, lt

consists of three digits: one each for the page, the line and the word.

Access to the balance operating program:

— Press the tare bar.
— Press the ON/OFF button at the same time.
— Release both keys.

After completion of the automatic power on test, the Status of the

balance operating program appears in the weight display: "L" Stands
for the list mode. In this mode you can only verify the code setting, but
you cannot program new codes.

lf you want to change a program code, you must first unlock the
program access.

To do so, switch the weight comparator off with the ON/OFF key.
Remove the plastic cap at the left side of the display head and slide
the access switch (12) in arrow direction.

Press the tare bar.

— Press the ON/OFF button at the same time.
— Release both keys.

The display will signal "C" representing the change mode, and now
you can proceed to make the necessary changes.

21
After the balance operating program has been called, the display will
show a continuous numerical sequence from 0 to 4 representing the
"page" selection, in addition to the Status code letter "L" or "C". When
your selected number for the "page" appears, push the tare bar. The
"page" code number now stops in the display, and the numerical
sequence for the "line" Starts. Press the tare bar again to stop the
code number of your choice in the display, and your desired selection
will be entered. Next, the numerical sequence for the "word" appears.

The appearance of the U symbol indicates the actual setting.

To make changes ("C" mode), press the tare bar when the
appropriate code appears.

Brief display of theU symbol confirms your selection, followed by

return to the "zero" representing the line.

To return to the weighing program:

push the tare bar each time a 0 appears in the numerical sequence,
(word, line, page). lf you have made code changes, your code entry is
stored as soon as the display returns to the weighing mode.
Lock the balance operating program with the menu access switch
(display "L") and replace the protective cap.
