CHEMISTRY:Properties of Matter
Quiz 1 : Portfolio/E-Portfolio for classification of matter

CLASSIFICATION AND PROPERTIES OF MATTER

Chemistry is often defined as the study of matter. Associated with
this concept of matter are Terms such as substance, compound, element,
mixture, etc. Matter is also described as possessing Certain properties,
e.g. smell, color. We distinguish between physical or chemical properties.
Substances can also undergo changes, some of which are classified as
physical changes and others as Chemical changes. Terms such as these
need to become part of the vocabulary of students who wish To
undertake a serious study of chemistry. In the following sections,
definitions will be given for These concepts and are illustrated in a series
of simple exercises.

Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space. Matter can
exist in three forms or phases: Solids, liquids, or gases.
A substance is defined as matter which is homogeneous and of
which all parts are alike. Substances are either elements or compounds.
Elements are pure substances which cannot be decomposed into
simpler substances by chemical Means. Some familiar elements are
oxygen, gold, sulfur, and iron.
Compounds are pure substances that are composed of two or
more elements. Substances such as Water, salt, and sugar are simple
examples of compounds. On the other hand, wood or a piece of Marble
are not homogeneous and therefore not pure substances or compounds.
They are called Mixtures.
 Concept Map on mixtures and their characteristic

It is not only necessary to define the various forms of matter but

we need to be concerned Also with the characteristics or properties of
matter. Furthermore, we wish to define the changes that Matter can
undergo
A physical property of matter is one that can be observed without
changing its composition. Gold Is a shiny yellow metal. Lead has a high
density. Observations of these characteristics do not Change the
composition.
A chemical change is one that leads to a change in the composition
of the matter involved. The Burning of wood leads to products very
different than the starting material.
A chemical change is one that leads to a change in the composition
of the matter involved. The Burning of wood leads to products very
different than the starting material.
Physical changes are quite often reversible. Ice can be melted to
form liquid water; However, water can be readily reconverted to ice.
Chemical changes are usually irreversible. Gasoline can be burned to
produce water and carbon dioxide, but it is not possible to reconvert
these Into the original material.
Even though matter can undergo changes it is important to realize
that in ordinary chemical Reactions matter cannot be created or
destroyed. We say that matter is conserved. This is one of the
Fundamental conservation laws.

PROCEDURE

Part I. Mixtures
Obtain small samples of the following mixtures: dirt, river water, granite
chips, air, and Brass. Examine each carefully using a magnifying lens if
necessary. Make a table in your laboratory Notebook and indicate whether
the mixture is homogeneous or heterogeneous. Also, give a general
Description of each mixture.
Fold a piece of filter paper and place it in a filter funnel. Moisten the
filter paper with Distilled water. Filter 10 mL of river water and collect the
filtrate (the liquid which passes through The filter) in an evaporating dish.
Carefully heat and evaporate the filtrate. Examine the residue Obtained.

Part II. Substances

Examine small samples of each of the following: sugar, sodium
chloride, and copper. CAUTION: Consult your instructor for proper disposal
of substances used. For each substance Examined enter the following
a.Name of substance
b.Three physical properties for each
c.Effect of heat on the pure substance
d.Extent of the solubility of the pure substance in water
e.Tell whether a physical change, chemical change, or both changes took
place when the pure substance was heated.

Part III. Use of Data Tables

Much useful information on the properties of substances has been
assembled. One such Compilation is the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and
Physics. A copy of this is available in the Laboratory. Look up the following
information for sodium chloride and record it in your laboratory Notebook.
a.Formula

b.Formula weight

c.Density

d.Melting point

e.Boiling point

f.Solubility in water at both 0o

C and 100oC

 Diagram of Water Cycle.

The water cycle.

 The water cycle is the process through which water moves around the
Earth.
 It follows the path of water as it changes from a liquid to a vapor, or
even into solid form.
 The major stages of the water cycle are evaporation and condensation.

 Photo essay on the experiment conducted on germination of mongo seeds.

Mongo seeds are the familiar white bean sprouts seen in stores and
restaurants. They’re also known as mung beans, or mungbeans; their taxonomic
name is Vigny radiata. They’re easy to sprout in the classroom or home, and they
illustrate the stages of germinating dicotyledonous seedlings – dicots for short.
Dicots sprout with separate leaves on a stem, unlike single-leaf monocots like grass.
Mongos are also epigeal, meaning the seedlings emerge from their seed husks and
leave them below ground.

Taking up Water
The first step is to soak the dry beans so they absorb water to begin the
germination process. Any beans that float will not be viable. Given a day of soaking,
the beans will swell as they take in water. Mung beans more than double their
weight, and nearly triple their volume. While the water level in the container doesn’t
change, the swelling beans take up a greater proportion of the volume.

A Root Emerges
The seed husk, called the testa, swells more quickly than the embryonic seedling
inside. The first sign of germination is the emergence of the white root tip called the
radicle. Since this growth process requires oxygen, the beans are drained for
exposure to air while sprouting. With each day, these roots grow longer. If the beans
are sprouted in soil, there’s nothing to see yet above the surface while this is
happening.

 Photo essay on the life cycle of the butterfly.

Lifecycle refers to the stages of growth and development of a living thing. All living
things go through different stages of development throughout their lives. Change in
actions and behaviors are deeply associated with the changes in the stages of life.
Butterfly is such an insect, which has a complete lifecycle consisting of four separate
stages. In this paper, we will discuss the lifecycle of a butterfly in order to get an
understanding of all stages of growth.

A butterfly’s growth and development process is known as metamorphosis.

There are four stages of development in the life of a butterfly. Each stage is unique
and represents a different life structure of a butterfly. The four stages of
development that a butterfly goes through include Egg, Larva, Pupa, and Adult
butterfly.
Egg is the very first stage of a butterfly’s life. A female butterfly lays 10 to 100
tiny eggs at a time on the leaves of the plants.Butterflies select the leaves for eggs
based on the food choice of the caterpillars. A butterfly lays her eggs only on the
leave, which caterpillars like to eat. Each type of butterfly has a different choice of
leaves, which it uses to lay down the eggs. “The food source needed in a butterfly
habitat varies among species” (Barrett, 2011). It takes nearly five to ten days for a
caterpillar to emerge from an egg.

The second stage of a butterfly’s lifecycle is one in which an egg hatches into a
caterpillar.

A butterfly, in the form of a larva or a caterpillar, eats the maximum amount of

food in this stage. The stage of caterpillar is the primary growth stage of a butterfly.
A caterpillar is a work-like form of butterfly with a pattern of beautiful stripes on its
skin. Caterpillars have just one aim, which is to eat more and more food. It even eats
the shell of the egg from which it comes out. “The caterpillar hatches from the egg
and usually the first thing it does is eat the egg shell” (Ballard, 2009).

Pupa is the third stage of a butterfly’s lifecycle. In this stage of life, the butterfly
in the form of a pupa, hangs itself in an upside-down position to a twig. Another
change, which occurs in this stage, is the growth of a tough flexible shell outside the
body of the pupa. The structures of a caterpillar are deformed and a new adult
butterfly’s structure is formed. This stage is also known as the resting stage of
butterfly’s life. The habit of continuous eating goes away in this stage. A pupa
appears to be dead but inside the shell, the process of transformation continues. “It
is generally incapable of movement but is able to move certain body parts” (Kumar,
2011). This stage of a butterfly’s lifecycle lasts for one to two weeks.

Adult butterfly is the last stage of a butterfly’s life. In this stage, a fully
developed adult butterfly comes out of the shell. The head, thorax, legs, swollen
abdomen, and wings come out of the shell one by one. A butterfly rests for a while in
order to let its structures become dry and hard. Once the structures of a newly
emerged butterfly become hard, it becomes ready to fly. A butterfly usually lives for
two to three weeks. However, there exist some types of butterfly, which can live for
months.

 Reflection Paper on the movie “Muro ami

Reflection Paper on the movie

“Muro ami”
The story of Muro Ami will make a great impact on the viewers, it has not
only touched the heart of the people but I believe it will lead to strengthening of
laws about illegal fishing and will consider child labor for revision. The real
situation of our country that depicted in the film is the fact that we cannot deny
that poverty drives the people go beyond the boundaries. Its like “kapit sa
patalim” whether the parents of the children are aware or not, about the child
labor law, I guess for them muro ami (reef hunting) is a way of life, a tradition, a
culture, a way of survival.

This film has many characteristics that make the film itself a successful one
and can be proud of it, particularly its story that is based on the reality in the
country and the production of the film itself, of course. The knowledge that has
brought our countrymen, and perhaps the world, will open people’s eyes,
however, We have child labor legislation, and because of the lack of alternatives
and benefits for the children they forbid to work, the government should think
again and amend the same law because they give nothing for their lives.

Muro ami fishing knocks the coral reefs for the fishes to get out. The coral reefs
will be ruined as they do this thing, allowing the fish to lose home. If there are no
coral reefs, there will also be no food for the fishes. It is the most aggressive
type of fishing-fisherman pounding huge objects such as steaks or big
blocks, typically cement. It pushes & frightens fish into the surrounding nets and
then catches them. As everything in the world, you can do the same to others if
you disturb the organism. This reflects the traditional perception of how
individuals cope with the livelihood they have chosen to associate
with. One of the cruelest, mostcataclysmic forms of illegal fishing that kills
coral reefs and abuses children is Muro-Ami Fishing, better known as reef-
hunting. Consequently, this activity kills corals that take entire lifetimes to form
and causes some of these poor children to die. Muro-Ami Fishing, best referred to
as reef-hunting, is one of the cruelest, mostcataclysmic types of illegal fishing that
kills coral reefs and abuses children.
The goal of the movie “Muro-Ami” is to show the importance of our nature,
particularly the sea, where we can search for abundant resources, especially for
most Filipinos, that serve as living things for people. This film shows the
prevalence of illegal fishing and the degradation of corrals. This film serves as a
precaution for everyone if the Muro-Ami exercise is going to happen
