HOW TO APPLY FOR

“PERMESSO DI
SOGGIORNO”
(Residency Permit)
4 STEPS

1. Prepare the envelope (KIT) that you can collect from the Post
Office: enclose required documents, application form (MODULO 1)
and payment slip – duly filled as instructed;

2. Submit the envelope to the post office and pay the relevant fee;
you must apply within 8 days from your arrival in Italy;

3. After about 2-4 months: Meet the police officer at the


Questura/Commissariato (police station);

4. After about 1 month: Collect your Permesso di soggiorno card at


the police station.
STEP 1: PREPARE THE KIT

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS

 Photocopy in black/white of passport - only pages containing your


personal data + the visa

 Photocopy of visa documentation and of any letter issued / stamped by


the Consulate

 Photocopy of Cattolica admission letter

 Photocopy of health insurance coverage

 A revenue stamp of €16 (MARCA DA BOLLO): buy it at any tabaccheria


HOW TO BUY THE HEALTH
INSURANCE – WAITALY
1. Go to the website http://www2.waitaly.net/en/associati/
2. In the section for not resident citizens, click on "Join" to proceed with the
registration.
3. Scroll down and select the items as follows:
- I'm a SPONSOR;
- Are in Italy for STUDY (NON-EU);
- Going to study in Italy for 12 MONTHS;
- Choose a Username and a Password.
4. Select a method of payment:
- by credit card or Paypal: suggested option;
- by going at the post office: the payment receipt must be sent to: [email protected];
- by bank transfer: risky! Lengthy international transfers.
5. When Waitaly gets the payment, they’ll send an e-mail with a link and your
credentials:
– click on the link and login;
– click on “Area riservata” and on “Certificato copertura sanitaria assicurativo ITA”.
– print the pdf resuming the agreement and submit it together with your request for the permit
of stay.

STEP 2: SUBMIT THE KIT

At the counter (presso Servizi alla persona/


Sportello Amico):

• Show your passport and submit the envelope (do not seal it!)

• PAY a total of € 101,96 in cash (€30 to the post office + €70,46


electronic permit of stay+ €1,50 tax)

• The post officer will give you:


o the RECEIPT of your application (very important! Carry it with you at all
times together with your passport and make additional copies!)
o an appointment letter indicating the date and time you should
go to the police station (very important! Make additional copies!)
STEP 3: MEET THE POLICE
(Bachelor + LM students)
The police will take your finger prints.

Bring with you:

 Passport

 4 identical passport-sized pictures

 Receipt and appointment letter given by the post office

 Cattolica enrollment certificate: to be requested at Polo Studenti

 Original health insurance contract

 Originals of documents issued by Italian Consulate

 Proof of accommodation and economic means.


STEP 3: MEET THE POLICE
(Specializing Master students)

The police will take your finger prints.

Bring with you:

 Passport

 4 identical passport-sized pictures

 Receipt and appointment letter given by the post office

 Cattolica enrollment certificate: to be requested at Ufficio Master

STEP 4: COLLECT YOUR PERMESSO

If the application is complete and approved, you have to


check the status here:

Your Permesso should be ready to be collected


approximately one month after the appointment. If you
do not receive any message from the police, come to
our office to check the status of your application.

About the Italian Residency Permit

• The duration of your Residency Permit cannot be longer


than the duration of your Visa.

• You cannot apply for a Residency Permit for longer than 1


Year (Type D or Study). It means that, if you are staying in
Italy more than 1 year, you will have to renew it at least
once.
CODICE FISCALE

If you wish to open a bank account, rent an apartment or buy an Italian


telephone card you will need a Tax Number called Codice Fiscale. It is a unique
number of identification for tax purposes. This card is issued by Agenzia delle
Entrate upon presentation of a valid identity document and a copy of your Visa
(if you are not an E.U. student). The application for Codice Fiscale is free of
charge.
