Here are the Guidelines in Soldering And De Soldering
1. Prepare the needed tools and materials before the start
of a soldering activity

2. Set up the workplace
• Make sure that the working area is properly and
adequately lighted and ventilated
• Use proper protective equipment or clothing
• Maintain cleanliness and order in the workplace.
• Use the tools and materials properly and carefully
3. Select the Solder and flux
Solder is a mixture of metals (such as lead and tin) which, when melted, is

used to join metal parts together. It usually comes in the form of long, thin

wire. Solder contains lead which is very toxic and harmful. Handle it with

utmost care to reduce, if not totally avoid, the risks of exposure and

poisoning. Choose a high-quality solder. Remember that high-quality tools

and materials help yield quality products. Do not inhale the smoke emitted

by solder. It is very dangerous to health.

•Flux is an agent that inhibits oxidations and helps the solder flow more

easily . Rosin flux or no clean flux is commonly used in electronics. Flux

may be part of the solder or a separate application .

4. Choose the correct tip - for the specific work
to be done. Tips may be pointed or flat. Some
soldering irons have replaceable tips, others
have permanent tips. The tip is the part of the
soldering iron that gets heated and melts the
solder.
5. Follow the steps in soldering
•Apply a thin, even coat of flux on the components to be joined
•Hold the soldering iron by its handle as if you are holding a pen .
•Hold the solder with your other hand.
•Touch the tip of the soldering iron to the area where two components join with the
solder in the between the components .
•Apply heat to that particular area for a few seconds. Check the amount of solder
needed.
•Remove the solder.
•Keep the tip on the area to continue melting the solder and form a joint.
•Remove the soldering iron. Turn it off
•Lets the joint cool. Keep it still and do not move or blow on it.

•Clean and dry the joints.

•Remove excess flux on the PCB. Too much flux may cause short circuit.

•Clean the tip by scraping it on a wet but not soaked sponge to remove the solder.

Place the soldering iron on the stand.

6. Evaluate the soldered output if successful or not. A good
solder you looks smooth, flat and uniform. A bad solder joint ,
called colder solder joint, looks dull, grainy and balled up.
7. De solder to undo mistake
•Heat the cold solder joint with the soldering iron until it melts .
•Use the de soldering pump to get rid of the melted solder. A de-soldering pump, also

known as solder sucker, is a small mechanical device that vacuums up the metal

solder.

•Place the tip of the pump over the melted solder and pull back the trigger lever to suck

it. Empty the tube afterward.

•Do this repeatedly until all the molten solder is removed.

•Do refresh soldering again .

What is solder wick used for?

-De-soldering braid or “wick” is

a pre-fluxed copper braid that is
used to remove solder, which
allows components to be
replaced and excess solder (e.g.
bridging) to be removed.
