Lesson 1 : AIR AND LAND POLLUTION
 VOCABULARY :
- HEALTH: It is the condition of a person’s body and mind . It
usually means to be free from illness , injury or pain .
To be healthy ‡ to be unhealthy
- Environment : It is the natural / external conditions in which
people live ( ex: land , air , water …) .
- To pollute : to make something dirty or impure especially by adding
harmful or poisonous substances .
- Pollution : ( noun ) it is the introduction of contaminants into the
natural environment that cause adverse / negative change.

 TYPES OF POLLUTION / CAUSES / EFFECTS

AIR POLLUTION - fumes released from
- smog ( smoke + fog )
cars and factories.
- acid rain
-hole in the ozone
layer.

LAND POLLUTION -litter/garbage /waste - diseases
/rubbish - illnesses
- used up batteries
WATER POLLUTION -oil spills from ships/ - death of sea life
tankers into the oceans ( fish and vegetation)
- skin rash
NOISE POLLUTION -overcrowded towns -earaches/ headaches
- loud speakers - deafness

 LEXIS :
- To release ( verb) : to liberate something
- Fumes (noun) : smoke or gas that smells strongly
- Smog ( noun) : a mixture of smoke and fog
- Toxic (adjective) = poisonous : harmful ,causing death or
illness substances if taken into the body.
- Deafness ( noun) : inability to hear / adjective : deaf
- Ache /eik/ (noun) : continuous pain
- Inflammable  ( adjective) : that can be set on fire /that can
catch fire quickly
- Contaminated (adjective) / to contaminate (verb): to make
something impure by adding dangerous or harmful substances.
