CHN Reflection

The documentary highlights several ongoing challenges within the Philippine healthcare system including lack of access to care, especially in rural areas, lack of public health awareness and prevention programs, shortage of healthcare workers and facilities, and insufficient budget. While the former health secretary discussed plans to address these, including increasing medical staff and benefits, a public health nurse interviewed expressed skepticism due to ongoing shortages and lack of resources. As a public health nurse, one way to help address the high maternal mortality rate is to conduct community education seminars and home visits to promote prenatal care, checkups, and access to free vitamins and healthcare centers. However, many of the systemic issues presented in the documentary from 14 years ago still persist today.
