BT11803 Tutorial 3 ANSWER

This document contains a tutorial on functions and graphs with 4 questions: 1. It asks to find the values of two functions f(x) and h(v) at given points. 2. It asks to find the values of two functions g(x) and F(t) at given points, where F(t) is a piecewise function. 3. It asks to find the x- and y-intercepts of the graph of y=2x+3 and to graph another function s=f(t)=4+t^2, identifying its domain, range, and intercepts. 4. It asks to sketch the graph of y=-1/2x

TUTORIAL 3 – Functions and Graphs

Question 1
Find the function values for each function

a. f ( x )=2 x +1; f ( 0 ) , f ( 3 ) , f (−4)

b. h ( v )=
1
√v ()
;h ( 16 ) , h
1
4
, h(1−x )

ANSWER
a. f ( x )=2 x +1; f ( 0 ) , f ( 3 ) , f (−4)

For f ( 0 ) ;
f ( 0 )=2 ( 0 ) +1=1
For f ( 3 ) ;
f ( 3 )=2 (3 )+ 1=7
For f (−4 ) ;
f (−4 )=2 (−4 )+ 1=−7

b. h ( v )=
1
√v ()
;h ( 16 ) , h
1
4
, h(1−x )

For h ( 16 ) ;
1 1
h ( 16 ) = =
√ 16 4
For h ( 14 ) ;
h ( 14 )= 1 1
= =2

√( )
1 1
4 2

For h ( 1−x ) ;
1
h ( 1−x )=
√ 1−x

Question 2
Find the function values for each function
a. g ( x )=|x−3|; g ( 10 ) , g ( 3 ) , g(−3)
{
2
if t>1
b. F ( t )= 0 if t=1
−1 if t<1
F ( 12 ) , F (−√ 3 ) , F (1 ) , F ( 185 )
ANSWER
a. g ( x )=|x−3|; g ( 10 ) , g ( 3 ) , g(−3)
For g ( 10 )
g ( 10 )=|10−3|=|7|=7
For g ( 3 )
g ( 3 )=|3−3|=|0|=0
For g(−3)
g (−3 )=|−3−3|=|−6|=6

{
2 if t>1
b. F ( t ) = 0 if t=1
−1 if t<1

F ( 12 ) , F (−√ 3 ) , F (1 ) , F ( 185 )
For F ( 12 )
Since 12>1, then F ( 12 )=2

For F (− √ 3 )

Since −√ 3<1, then F (− √ 3 ) =−1

For F ( 1 )
Since 1=1, then F ( 1 )=0

For F ( 185 )
Since
18
5
>1, then F
18
5
=2 ( )
Question 3
Intercept of a graph
a. Find the x - and y -intercepts of the graph of y=2 x +3 and sketch the graph.
ANSWER
If y=0, then
−3
0=2 x +3 so that x=
2
−3
Thus, the x -intercepts is ( , 0). If the x=0 , then
2
y=2 ( 0 )+3=3
So the y -intercepts is (0,3)

−3 −1 1
x −1 0 1
2 2 2
y 0 1 2 3 4 5

b. Graph the function s=f ( t )=4 +t 2 and give the domain and range. Also, find the
intercepts.
ANSWER
If s=0, then 0=4 +t 2
0=(2+t )(2+ t) so that t=± 2
If t=0 , then s=4
So the intercepts are (2,0), (−2,0), (0,4)
Domain: all numbers; Range: all real number ≤ 4
Question 4
−1 2
Use the graph of f ( x )=x 2 to sketch the graph of y= x +2
