Dangers of Electricity 1 QP

The safety expert recommends replacing normal domestic light switches in the laundry with a safer alternative that does not contain metals. This is because the laundry has a very hot and damp atmosphere, so a non-metallic switch avoids potential electric shocks. The lights should be switched on and off using a sensor or touch-capacitive buttons for added safety. Fuel flowing through the refueling hose can build up an electric charge on the aircraft due to triboelectric charging. However, if the aircraft tires and wheels are wet during refueling, there will be no large buildup of charge as the wet tires conduct electricity to the ground.

2 (a) An electrical safety expert is inspecting a laundry.

The main workroom has a very hot

and damp atmosphere.

The safety expert recommends that normal domestic light switches, as shown in Fig. 9.1,
are replaced.

Fig. 9.1

(i) Explain why this recommendation is made.

A safer alternative should be implemented instead which does not contain any metals

since this is in a place with heat and humid

(ii) Suggest how the lights should be switched on and off.

Through a sensor instead or using touch-capacitive buttons

(b) Fig. 9.2 shows an aircraft being refuelled through a rubber hose.

Fig. 9.2

(i) Suggest how fuel flowing through the hose can cause a large build-up of electric
charge on the aircraft.

(ii) The aircraft is refuelled on a particular day when the tyres and wheels are wet.

Explain why there will be no large build-up of charge in this case.
