Sub: Reconditioning of Tongue rails/Stock rails and Crossings.

Reconditioning of Tongue/stock rails require high precision and quality control. Therefore,
it is mandated to undertake the work on cess or in depot only. In this connection
provisions of IRPWM and Manual for reconditioning of MM steel P&C, SEJs and CMS
crossing (Rev 2020), In-situ reconditioning of switches is prohibited. Relevant Provisions
are reproduced as under:

Provision of IRPWM Para 430(2) (d)-


“Reconditioning of tongue rail shall be done on level cess / depot along with stock rail”.

Provision of Para 7.1.3.2 of Manual for reconditioning of MM steel P&C, SEJs and
CMS crossing:-
“Reconditioning of Tongue rail inside the track leads to unsafe condition. Due yto
pressure of clearing traffic block, it may not be always possible to complete all activities
in the available block time leading to unsafe condition, Therefore, the reconditioning of
worn out tongue rail shall be done by taking it outside the track and can be done on cess
or in depot”.

Divisions are directed to ensure that no in-situ reconditioning of Tongue/Stock rails is


done. Further, while reconditioning of Tongue/Stock rails and Crossings the provisions of
IRPWM and “Manual for reconditioning of MM steel P&C, SEJs and CMS crossing (Rev
2020)” shall be strictly followed with regard to quality and finished profile. Violation of
above provisions will be viewed seriously.
