3. Tradition around the world:
Nyepi (bali’s day of silence)
 What is nyepi?
Nyepi is a hindu celebration that marks the start of a new year for the balinese - a day to cleanse the
island of the previous year's misdeeds and bad omens, establishing a pure and positive year ahead.
 What happens during nyepi?
The night before: ogoh-ogoh parades

 Ogoh-ogoh: (n) a frighten statue up to 25 feet tall sculpted by villager

 Balinese men and boys carry ogoh-ogoh with the help of a bamboo grid and parade. The
streets are accompanied by noise and gamelan music.tourists and visitors are welcome to
watch the parades, take photos, and enjoy this unique spectacle.
The day of nyepi:
 The entire island is “closed”, including the airport as there will be no incoming or outgoing
flights. The roads are off limits, as everyone is expected to stay indoors for 24 hours. Because

3
no one should be out and about, you’re prohibited from entering any beaches, and all
restaurants, grocery stores, and other types of shops will be closed for everyone. Although
nyepi is primarily a hindu holiday, non-hindu residents and travellers in bali observe the day
of silence as well, out of respect for their fellow citizens.
The day after nyepi: ngembak agni
 The next day, social activity picks up quickly. After staying indoors for 24 hours, families
and friends gather to socialise and ask for forgiveness from one another as a way of letting go
of the past. Ngembak agni, a day to rejoice and spend the day outside, is celebrated
differently in different areas. Other places have fun activities like mud bathing or markets
that appear and pop-up for the day to celebrate.

CUSTOM
1. Definition: (n) an accepted way of behaving or of doing things in a society or a community.
(oxford)
2. The importance of custom:
o Custom regulates social life:
Custom is an important means of controlling social behaviour. They are so powerful that no one can
escape their range. They regulate social life especially among illiterate people to a great extent.

o Custom is the repository of social heritage:

It preserves our culture and transmits it to the future generations, brings people together and develops
social relationships among them. It helps in adjustment with many social problems. Customs provide
stability and a feeling of security in human society.
o Customs mould personality:
Customs play an important part in personality building. From birth to death man is under the
influence of customs. A person is born out of marriage, a custom; he is brought up according to the
customs and when he dies he is given last rites as laid down by customs. Customs mould his attitudes
and ideas.
o Customs are universal:
There is no country or community wherein customs are not found. In some communities they are
regarded so sacred that their violation cannot be even thought of. Society wishes us to follow
them. It is thus evident that customs play a major part in regulating our social behaviour.

Kissing in france:
French people aren't content to simply say hello or shake hands, they exchange kisses. "la bise" is an
integral part of french greeting culture which normally involves planting an air kiss on each cheek.
Spitting on the bride at weddings in greece: guests at a greek wedding will pretend to spit onto the
bride and groom as they walk down the aisle as a married couple for the first time. “spitting” on the
couple is traditionally done three times to protect the couple from evil spirits. Guests will also throw
rice to promote fertility and happiness for the newlyweds.
Tipping in the us:
Unlike many other countries who don’t tip at all or who only tip in small amounts, tipping is rather
mandatory at most restaurants in the us. In fact, it is expected that customers leave between 10-20
percent of the bill in tips. There’s no doubt that tipping culture in the us gives an incentive for
waiters and waitresses to provide better service.
Slurping in japan:
Most societies around the world have rules about table etiquette. For western cultures, noisily
consuming food is considered rude. In japan, however, making slurping sounds when eating noodles
is a way of indicating that you’re really enjoying them.

Hanging out in cemeteries in denmark:

The danes find it necessary to convert their cemeteries into areas for socialising, a rather pragmatic
use of space we might add. These cemeteries are well manicured and teeming with locals when the
weather finally begins to warm up.

Traditional wedding
Definition.
A wedding is a ceremony where two people are united in marriage. Wedding traditions and customs
vary greatly between cultures, ethnic groups, religions, countries, and social classes. Most wedding
ceremonies involve an exchange of marriage vows by a couple, presentation of a gift (offering, rings,
symbolic item, flowers, money, dress), and a public proclamation of marriage by an authority figure
or celebrant. Special wedding garments are often worn, and the ceremony is sometimes followed by
a wedding reception. Music, poetry, prayers, or readings from religious texts or literature are also
commonly incorporated into the ceremony, as well as superstitious customs.

In short :  a marriage according to the historical norms of a given society, usually for the primary
purpose of establishing a family. Although prenuptial customs vary in different cultures, a traditional
marriage generally follows a period of courtship, public announcement of wedding plans, and a
wedding ceremony.

For many years, the traditional wedding took precedence over all others.

Traditional weddings
The traditional wedding is a classic favorite, and it’s easy to see why. In the past, weddings were
often extravagant affairs that could last all day or even multiple days. Guests would typically be
invited to attend as many events as possible, from the rehearsal dinner the night before, to the after-
party at the newlywed couple’s home.

Traditional weddings can be extremely expensive to pull off since many couples are expected to
provide transportation and meals for all their guests, and accommodation for anyone coming from
out of town. Practically speaking, traditional weddings can also be a lot of work for the bride and
groom, who are expected to take on the majority of the event planning decisions themselves.

Traditional weddings pros:

●    guests respect the significance of the ceremony and come prepared to be respectful.
●    traditional weddings are full of family traditions and cultural significance that people love.
●    traditional weddings are fairly straightforward to plan.

Traditional weddings cons:
●    traditional weddings can be very expensive, especially if you want to have several events over
multiple days.
●    a lot of time and effort are required on behalf of the bride and groom to pull off a traditional
wedding successfully.
●    the planning process can be stressful due to its somewhat rigid nature.

Non-traditional wedding
Definition of a non-traditional wedding:
 When a wedding deviates from the norm, it is typically referred to as 'nontraditional'. Non-
traditional elements can be created and range in size from having a self-uniting ceremony to
incorporating a special unity ceremony into the main ceremony. There are a lot of options
than just the following tradition for weddings.

 Planning: For traditional weddings, one person is typically hired to plan and design the
entire event. Planners, however, are not always necessary. The best weddings are commonly
the ones with the fewest details. Since more complex plans have become standard in the
wedding industry, the minimal approach is unconventional. A stylist or photographer can be
hired in place of a planner to assist in conceptualizing the event.
 Several ceremonies: The traditional wedding in the "western world" consists of only a
ceremony. Having only one ceremony can lead to stress because couples believe they only
have one chance to get everything right. People believe they can only afford one ceremony,
but ceremonies are only as expensive as they are designed to be. Couples can relieve the
stress of an 'only one chance' mindset by breaking up a wedding over multiple days.
 Ceremony site: Nowadays, even weddings are often planned to resemble a church (chớts)
with an aisle and an archway. Guests at a non - traditional wedding can be seated in a circle,
spiral, or simply spread out organically.
 Entrance of the couple: The custom of a woman having her father walk her down the aisle
(ai) is so deeply ingrained (in grain) in our culture that I believe most daughters and fathers
have considered it at some point. Unfortunately, patriarchy (pa tri a ki)  and the treatment of
women as property underpin this sentimental tradition. Tradition is becoming less and less
relevant, especially as same-sex and alternative-gender identity marriages become more
common. As a society, we place a higher value on equality, and leaving this tradition is a
meaningful way of demonstrating that.

Example of a non-traditional wedding:

On the day of your wedding, all of your closest loved ones should be present, right? There's nothing
wrong with some of those figures having four legs instead of two. This wedding was held on the
beach, as seen in the image, and the small dog that was there to accompany the bride was a very
special presentation. There are many ways to include your pet at your wedding, from dressing them
up and having them accompany you to the sanctuary to give them the most important role as ring
bearers. Additionally, it makes your wedding special and memorable for all of your guests.

Why do people opt for nontraditional weddings?

Traditional Wedding

 Takes place at a church or a place of worship

 An officiant conducts a religious ceremony

 Last anywhere from 1-3 hours

 The bride wears a white dress

8
 Music: Organ or harp

 Vows are standard but can be customized by the couple

 Heterosexual) wedding

 The bride and groom family sit on opposite sides of the aisle

 Non-traditional wedding

 The bride's parents pay for the ceremony

 Takes place anywhere you like

 Non-religious officiant or marriage commissioner

 Last anywhere from 15 min – 3 hours but typically no longer than 30 min

 Wedding dress can be any color

 Music: anything from a live band to an iPod

 The couple can create their own personal vows

 Heterosexual and homosexual

 There are no rules on who has to pay.

 Anything goes!

=> Nowadays, people are more likely to select non-traditional weddings because they feel at ease
and have the freedom to use their creativity. Non-traditional weddings are not bound by old rules
and add new colors to each individual's wedding. They are free to select the wedding gown, the
location, and other details as they see fit. That will enable them to have a unique wedding.
