Function Generator XR2206

XR2206 Function Generator. An indispensable companion for any electronics lab is the function generator. It provides sine and triangular voltages from approximately 1Hz to 1MHz, depending on the timing capacitors used. Amplitude and frequency can be adjusted via two potentiometers. Output offset and sine wave purity can also be adjusted using trimmer potentiometers. The module is based on the XR2206 integrated circuit and operates from a 12V DC supply, generating a virtual ground at half the supply voltage.

XR2206 Function generator

Precision Function Generator XR2206

A most versatile piece of equipment for an electronic lab is a function Generator. It

can be used in many experiments and measuring setups. The Module described
here is based on the industry standard integrated circuit XR2206 and is easily built
at a very low price. It provides Sine and Triangle output in the Range of about 1Hz
to 1MHz. Amplitude and frequency is controlled by two potentiometers. Output
Offset and distortion of the sine wave can be adjusted to a minimum using small
trimmer potentiometers

The schematic, based on the Application note:

LAyout and component placement.
The frequency range is selected with a DIP-Switch. Alternativeley you could use a
suitable switch that is routed to a front panel.

The module operates from 12V DC. A virtual floationg ground (at 1/2 operating
voltage) is generated by this circuit!

Keep that in mind when connectiong the module!

New Version

XR2206 Function Generator.

An indispensable companion for any electronics lab is the function generator. It provides
a wealth of measurements and experiments. The module described here is based on
about 1 year ago XR2206 module and is published here has been completely
redesigned. The board is due to sufficient trace width slightly herzusetellen itself, even
the format once again reduced.

It provides sine and triangular voltages approx 1Hz to 1MHz, depending on the timing
capacitors used. Over two potentionmeter the amplitude and frequency can be
adjusted. About trimmer can also have the purity of the sine wave signal and the offset
of the output voltage can be changed.

The main controls are mounted so that they can be mounted on a front panel for
example.

An open collector output signals can be retrofitted with a rectangular solder pad on the
PCB. External circuitry for accurate in this case, the data sheet for more information.
Here is the diagram, it is based on the standard application circuit in the datasheet.

Adjusted accordingly provides a very clean sine wave generator, here at about 100kHz.

The structure can be made very compact on a board. The frequency ranges are selected
by a DIP switch. Instead of the DIP switch can also use one switch, which is guided by
wires to a panel.

The module is operated with about 12V DC. Here, a virtual ground is formed at mid-
supply voltage, the mass output of the output signal is also at this potential. This is to be
observed when connecting the module!

Via the screw connection of course is also a real symmetric power supply (see suggested
application projects) possible.

With this small function generator is an inexpensive and flexible device for universal use
in the electronics area. Due to the small dimensions of the device can be used very
versatile, it is also a project for beginners in school or training suitable. Of course it will
not replace a professional generator, but nevertheless you can already perform so many
more measurements and experiments.
