OPTICAL INSTRUMENTS Test

1. This document contains a 14 question test on optical instruments like microscopes and telescopes. 2. Questions ask about the magnifying power of a microscope using different colors of light, whether a microscope can function as a telescope and vice versa, choosing lenses to construct the best telescope and microscope, drawing ray diagrams, deriving expressions for magnifying power, and setting up a compound microscope for a desired magnification. 3. Additional questions cover image formation and properties in telescopes and microscopes, increasing the magnifying power of a telescope, and differences between telescope and microscope construction and working.

OPTICAL INSTRUMENT

MAX MARKS 30: TIME ALLOWED: 1.5 HR

2 MARKS
1. Through a simple microscope, an object is seen in red light first and
then in violet light. In which case is magnifying power more?
2. Can a microscope function as a telescope by inverting it? Can a
telescope function as a microscope?

3 MARKS

3. Using the data given below, state which two of the given lenses will you
prefer to construct a best possible
(i) Telescope
(ii) Microscope

Also, indicate which of the selected lenses is to be used as an objective

and as an eye piece in each case.
Lenses Power Aperture
L1 6D 1 cm
L2 3D 8 cm
L3 10 D 1 cm
4. Draw a labelled ray diagram to show the formation of image by a
compound microscope. Derive the expression for the magnifying power
of a compound microscope.
5. Draw ray diagram to show the image formation in a reflecting type
telescope. Write three advantages of a reflecting type telescope over a
refracting telescope.
6. An angular magnification of 30X is desired using an objective of focal
length 1.25 cm and an eye piece of focal length 5cm. how will you set
up the compound microscope?
7. A Small telescope has an objective lens of focal length 140cm and an
eye piece of focal length 5cm. If this telescope is used to view a 100m
tall tower 3km away what is the height of the image of the tower formed
by the objective lens? What is the height of the final image of the tower
if it is formed at 25cm?
8. Draw a ray diagram to show the image formation in an astronomical
telescope in normal adjustment. Why should the objective of telescope
be large?
9. Write down three major difference in construction or working of
microscope and telescope.

10.Write two ways to increase magnifying power of an astronomical
telescope.

CASE STUDY: COMPOUND MICROSCOPE. A compound microscope is

an optical instrument used for observing highly magnified images of tiny
objects. Magnifying power of a compound microscope is defined as the
ratio of the angle subtended at the eye by the final image to the angle
subtended at the eye by the object, when both the final image and the
object are situated at the least distance of distinct vision from the eye. It
can be given that : m = me × mo, where me is magnification produced by
eye lens and mo is magnification produced by objective lens. Consider a
compound microscope that consists of an objective lens of focal length 2.0
cm and an eyepiece of focal length 6.25 cm separated by a distance of 15
cm.

11.The object distance for eye-piece, so that final image is formed at the
least distance of distinct vision, will be
(a) 3.45 cm (b) –5 cm (c) –1.29 cm (d) 2.59 cm
12.How far from the objective should an object be placed in order to obtain
the condition described in Q.No. 12. (a) 4.5 cm (b) 2.5 cm (c) 1.5 cm (d)
3.0 cm
13.The intermediate image formed by the objective of a compound
microscope is
(a) real, inverted and magnified (b) real, erect, and magnified (c) virtual,
erect and magnified (d) virtual, inverted and magnified.
14.The magnifying power of a compound microscope increases when
(a) the focal length of objective lens is increased and that of eye lens is
decreased. (b) the focal length of eye lens is increased and that of
objective lens is decreased. (c) focal lengths of both objective and eye-
piece are increased. (d) focal lengths of both objective and eye-piece
are decreased.
