Estimating Square Roots for Grade 7

This document provides a mathematics resource package for teaching 7th grade students how to estimate square roots. It includes the objectives, content, learning resources, procedures, and reflection for the lesson. The procedures guide students through reviewing examples of estimating square roots without a calculator, practicing examples with a calculator, and discussing the steps to take to estimate any square root value to the nearest tenth. The reflection section allows the teacher to assess student learning and determine if additional practice is needed.

IV. PROCEDURES
A. Reviewing or As a review, let the students answer the following:
presenting the new Find the two consecutive integers where the given square
lesson root lies.
1) √ 45 2)√ 15 3) √ 175

Answers:

1) 6 and 7 2) 3 and 4 3) 13 and 14

B. Establishing a Activity: (Discovery Method)

purpose for the lesson Using a calculator, find the estimate value of the
following:

1)√ 45 2) √ 15 3) √ 175
Answers:
1)6.7 2) 3.9 3) 13.2

C. Presenting examples Post – Activity Discussion:

of the new lesson
Ask the following questions:
 Without using a calculator, can we solve or find
the estimate value of the given square root of a
number? (Answer: yes)

 How to find the approximate/ estimate value of

square root?
Answer:
Step 1: Write the two perfect squares the problem
is located between.
Step 2: Simplify the two perfect squares.
Step 3: Determine which perfect square the
problem is closest to, then estimate to the nearest
tenth.

D. Discussing new Discuss to the class on how to find the estimate value
concepts and of a square root by showing an example.
practicing new skills
#1 Example:
1. Approximate √ 40 to the tenths place.
Solution:
a) Find two consecutive integers which √ 40 lies.
36 < √ 40 < 49
√ 36 < √ 40 < √ 49
6 < √ 40 < 7
√ 40is between 6 and 7
b)Take the square of 6.5, midway between 6 and 7.
Then, compute (6.5)2 = 42.25
Since 42.25 > 40, then √ 40 is closer to 6 than to 7.

b) Compute for the squares of numbers between 6

and 6.5.
(6.1)2 = 37.21 (6.3)2 = 39.69
(6.2)2 = 38.44 (6.4)2 = 40.96
Since 40 is close to 39.69 than to 40.96,
√ 40 is approximately 6.3
E. Developing Mastery Activity: Think-Pair-Share
Choose a partner in the class. With your partner, answer
the given activity.
(see attachment A)

F. Finding practical Solve:

applications of A square garden has an area of 137 square feet. What is
concepts and skills in the approximate length of one side of the garden?
daily living
Answer: The length is approximately 11.7

G. Making Guide Question for Generalization:

Generalizations and
abstractions about  When to the estimate the given square root of a
the lesson number? (Possible answer: If the given square
root is an irrational or if it not a perfect square.)

 What are the steps to follow in estimating a square

root?
Answer:
Step 1: Write the two perfect squares the problem
is located between.
Step 2: Simplify the two perfect squares.
Step3: Determine which perfect square the
problem is closest to, then estimate to the nearest
tenth.

H. Evaluating learning Estimate each square root to the nearest tenth.

1) √ 15
2) √ 54
3) √ 72
4) √ 85
5) √ 250

Answers:
1)3.9 3) 8.5 5) 15.81
2)7.3 4) 9.2
