Column Splice

Bearing plates are commonly used on welded column splices where the upper and lower columns have different depths. They provide additional bearing area where needed. Unfinished filler plates are used instead when just pack-out thickness is required rather than additional bearing capacity. Bearing plates are typically 1.5 inches thick for splices between W8 and W10 columns and 2 inches thick between W10 and W12 or W12 and W14 columns.
