A. Answer these questions:
1. Who was Bilal bin Rabah?
Bilal bin Rabah, the Prophet’s mu’azzin was a faithful
believer with a pure heart.
2. What was his mother called?
His mother was called Hamama.
3. Who was Abu Dharr al-Ghifari?
He was a faithful Muslim and very sensitive of
temperament.
4. Why did Umayyah bin Khalaf treat Bilal so cruelly?
Bilal was slave to Umayya and he treated him cruelly
because he believed in Prophet Mohammad and the
oneness of Allah.
B. Who said the following and when?
1) “You will stay here till you die or deny what Mohammad
teaches you”.
Umayya bin Khalaf said this to bilal when he was torturing
him.

2) “One, one’.
Bilal said this when he was being tortured by his master
Umayyah bin Khalaf.
3) “O’ Bilal, deliver azan and bring rest to my heart”.
Prophet Mohammad said this to Bilal when it was time for
prayer.
4) “Abu Ruwaiha is my brother but he lacks good manners”.
Bilal said this when he went to propose for Abu Ruwaiha.
5) “Abu Bakr is our master and he set at liberty our master
Bilal”.
Umar bin al-Khattab used to say this about Bilal.
6) “O Abu Dharr, you are still a man belonging to pagan
times”.
Prophet Mohammad said this to Abu Dharr when he once
humiliated Bilal.
7) “Whenever I perform wodhu I always offer a few Rak’ahs
of salah”.
Bilal said this when the Prophet asked him the reason of
hearing his footsteps in paradise.
C. Find answers to the following questions:
1. Describe how did Umayya bin Khalaf persecute Bilal.
He used to bring him out in a scorching sun, throw him on
the burning sand on the back and have a huge stone placed
on his chest asking him to deny Muhammad’s teachings.
2. How did Bilal become free?
Once Abu Bakr siddiq saw him being tortured, he felt sad,
bought him from his master Umayya and set him free.

3. How can you say that Bilal was a very great fighter?
He was a great fighter as he took part in almost all the
battles during the time of Prophet Muhammad and killed
his master Umayya in the battle of Badr.
4. How did Bilal come to be known as the Prophet’s mu’azzin?
When Allah honoured the Muslims with the gift of Azan,
the Prophet commanded Bilal to deliver azan from the
Masjidun Nabawi. Thus he became Prophet’s Mu’azzin.
5. Why did Prophet Mohammad say to Abu Dharr once that
he was still a man belonging to pagan times?
The Prophet said that to him because he had humiliated
Bilal by calling him “the son of a black woman’.
6. What was its effect on him? Why?
It had a deep effect on him as he was a faithful Muslim and
very sensitive of temperament. He immediately apologized
for his bad conduct.
7. What lesson should we learn from this incident?
This incident teaches us a lesson that in the sight of Allah
all Muslims are equal. The thing which makes us better
than others is our faith not the cast or colour.
8. Bilal was a person pure of heart and very truthful. Can you
quote an incident from his life to prove this statement?
Once Abu Ruwaiha requested him to speak for him to the
family of a Yemeni woman whom he desired to marry. Bilal
told them about his proposal and informed them that Abu
Ruwaiha lacks good manners and now it’s their choice. He
did not deceive them by hiding the fact. This proves that he
was a very truthful person.

D. Write a short note on:
Bilal bin Rabah – the Mu’azzin of the Prophet.
Bilal bin Rabah, the Prophet’s mu’azzin was a faithful believer
with a pure heart. He was an Abyssinian descent. His fathers’
name was Rabah and his mother was Hamama. Bilal was one of
the seven early persons who accepted Islam.
He was a slave to Umayya bin Khalaf who used to torture him
for accepting Islam. Then he was set free by Abu Bakr Siddiq.
Later he became Mu’azzin of the Prophet in Masjidun-Nabawi.
He was very brave fighter and took part in almost all the battles
during the time of the Prophet. He was a person pure of heart
and very truthful. He was very conscious of Allah. Once the
Prophet told him “O Bilal! Last night I heard your foot steps in
paradise”. Such was Bilal bin Rabah the Prophet’s mu’azzin.
