IF CLAUSE + IMPERATIVE
A. SOCIAL FUNCTION
The social function of the kind of sentence is to express:
1. Command: If you are free, clean the room! Because your grandfather n grandmother
will come soon.
2. Request: Please, let me know if you are busy!
3. Advice: If the aspirin doesn’t work, just go to the doctor!
B. TEXT ORGANIZATION
Take a look at the following sentences and find out what the similarties are:
1. If you arrive there before me, please tell my friends that I will be late.
2. Just listen to what your father are saying if you don’t want him angry.
3. If he doesn’t finish the task on time, just give him some other extra times.
4. Please, let me know if you don’t receive the package!
5. Don’t go out if you are not in a good condition!
C. LINGUISTIC FEATURES
1. IF CLAUSE TYPE 1
Pattern: IF + SIMPLE PRESENT (is,am,are/ V1)
Examples:
a. If I GO home late, … (V1)
b. If you ARE okay, … (to be ARE)
c. If you don’t agree … (negative DON’T)
d. If she DOESN’T come, … (negative DOESN’T)
2. IMPERATIVE
Pattern: V1 + O/C ! and DON’T + V1 + O/C !
Examples:
a. …., stay at home!
b. Don’t do that, …!
c. …., see the doctor!
d. Please, give me a call, … !
e. A: Hi, guys.
B: oh, hello. Where have you been?
A: I have just been from teachers’ room.
B: You must have been called by the teacher again, mustn’t you?
A: Yeah, you are right.
B: Please, __________ if you don’t want the teacher to call you again.
