INTERVIEWEE’S :

Franz Bernard Gonzales

Bachelor of Science in Legal Management ( 2nd year)
Ateneo De Naga University

Ellen Mae S. Alingay

BSBA Human Resources Management( 3rd year)
Naga College Foundation

Yvonne Agor
BS in Nursing (2nd year)
University of Nueva Caceres

Group 2 chose one student from each of Naga City's three colleges to interview about their preferences and opinions on
popular genres as well as local/foreign movies or series that they actually watch. The interviewees have different opinions
in choosing local and foreign movies/series. Local movies or series were selected by one interviewee from Ateneo De
Naga University. Other interviewees from the University of Nueva Caceres and the Naga College Foundation preferred
foreign tv series or movies. According to the responses of the interviewees, we can see in our entertainment industry that
art pieces from other countries, such as movies and series, are much preferred for a variety of reasons:

First, each individual tends to choose foreign movies or series since every local cinema or series that is suggested to be
watched from different sites are mostly from foreign countries . It used to be that when they made movies or series , it’s
always for local consumption. It will always be battling for audience attention with a foreign movies or series that are
made for global audiences.

Second , most people are naturally curious about what their "neighbors" are up to. The same is true for viewers or
audiences. Curiosity drives people to learn how other people live, eat, dream, and live social lives, and they have always
wanted to explore, learn other cultures and try visiting new places. Movies or series made locally are accepted, but there
is often the same rigmarole going on. It is not enough to feed people's interest because they are already familiar with it
and exposed to the environment we live in in the Philippines.

Third , for the majority of Filipinos, anything foreign is good. That's what our colonizers instilled in us. They stifled
our sense of national pride and instilled in us the belief that foreign films or tv series are superior.
Fourth, Filipino movies and series usually have the same concept of how it will turn out that people get tired of
anticipating what will happen next in the scenarios and even have a grasp on how it will end. That is why watching
foreign movies or series would be more exciting since they have plot twists and contents that are new to Filipinos. An
example of this would be the Korean drama that one of the interviewees mentioned. In that series, the sport of fencing
was one of the main concepts of the movie, which was not mainstream in the Filipino movie industry.

And lastly, the graphical creativity of foreign movies is more advanced than what we have in our country, making
foreign movies more appealing and making fantasy more realistic than what we imagined.

In terms of choosing movies or series ,the group two concluded that movies were preferred over television series by
the interviewees. These are a couple of points which say movies are better than TV series : Since college students are
busy with their academic lives, having to spend an hour or two watching a movie is much more attainable than having to
watch a full series. Watching movies are easier to access, students can watch it anytime and anywhere. Movies are
definitely what they enjoy. It is only limited by a running time of two hours, as opposed to popular series that go on and
on for seasons, increasing the running time of series for days if watched without a pause. The movie also has a clear plot,
when compared to the series, their character remains the same. Series' plots and characters can change based on ratings
and audience demand and the majority of the Series are dialogue-driven at points in time.

As regards on each interviewee's response about what kind of genre the 3 interviewees prefer :The combination of
romance and comedy was chosen as the most popular genre by the two interviewees from Ateneo De Naga University
and Naga College Foundation because it gives them a sense of love, comfort, and a good laugh. They also mentioned that
as Filipinos, they enjoy laughing and feeling loved and comforted. The masa, not only relates to and understands this type
of genre because of the formulaic love story, but also because it depicts many aspects of typical Filipino day-to-day life,
conflicts faced, and real problems encountered. Simultaneously, rom-coms tend to avoid being overly serious in tone,
reflecting the typical Filipino trait , the ability to smile and laugh through any trouble or difficulties.
Finally , The interviewees have mentioned one series and three movies. For the series, one foreign is mentioned by a
student of Naga College Foundation called “Twenty-Five Twenty-One” . It is a Korean drama series. As for the movies,
there are two examples mentioned by the student of University of Nueva Caceres which are all romantic foreign popular
movies. The vows and A walk to remember . The other interviewee from Ateneo De Naga University also mentioned a
movie of one of the popular love teams in the Philippines which is the Kathiel movie , The How of Us .

These movies and series are currently popular, especially with gen z’s and millennials because a lot of people can
relate to the experience and events in the series and movies since it tells everything about family, friendships, dreams,
building relationships, and it portrays real-life situations. Overall, it all comes down to preferences and opinions on what
movies/series are popular at this time.

Analysis Relating to Examples :

One fascinating thing to do is to watch various types of movies and series. The number of people who are addicted to
this just kept on growing . As a matter of fact, the movies and series recommended by our interviewees, who are college
students, have a profound effect on their hearts and minds.

“The Hows of Us”: A 2018 movie about two lovers who live together as they catch their dreams, as their relationship
goes, challenges come along and these challenges will also challenge their relationship. The interviewee had interest not
just because it was acted by a famous Filipino Artist but because of the story that relates to the real time, the movie also
gives the interviewee a lesson about love that they can also use outside the movie .This example effectively
communicates to millennials and even those who are already in a relationship because it captures the dark side of intense
love through the story of Primo making sacrifices. There are times when we want to give up and let go, and we wonder
how long we should fight against something that is already hurting us.

The movie shows us the possible thing that we should do when the same situation apply, like Primo, we can also do
what he did, showing that he is determined and working hard to take back the love that George has to him, we can also be
like him when our partners is doubting or questioning our love to them. The sequence of the movie in its exposition of
how love can go wrong when one participant is abusive and the other is irrationally devoted is quick but thorough. It
became so popular among millennials due to Kathniel's unique movie, which always has a happily ever after focus. This
movie is much more mature and realistic; at times today, the dialogues they throw at each other are overflowing with
quotes that inspire and touch the heart and mind of those who have experienced such relationships.

In terms of setting, it focuses on the house, which implies that it is also about family and relationships. It was once a
comfortable home, but both struggle in their long-term relationship. The first 30 minutes of the film are about how the
two of them first became a couple. The color scheme employs warmer tones, which help the audience understand the
emotions displayed by the actors and actresses.
“ A walk to Remember”: A Walk to Remember is a movie that is similar to a classic coming-of-age novel, a genre
in which the protagonist goes through significant growth after either having a life-changing experience or going through
some internal conflict. It revolves around a trouble-maker teenage boy named Landon. After a prank goes wrong, Landon
is sentenced to community service, where he gets to meet Jaime. The most important aspects of this film are how Landon
handles his self-image and how these realizations transform him into a good guy to which the viewers can relate. The
movie demonstrates that listening to your heart is the best way to make the most important choices in our lives.

It is relatable not only to those interviewees because the movie also addresses the fact that everything in life has a
purpose. The movie reveals how powerful great love is and how nothing is impossible, even miracles, can come true. It is
a movie for those who wish to know what love is, who are currently in love and want to stay that way.The settings are
mostly in a school, orphanage, and Jaime's house, where Jaime is treated and Lardon is always present. The setting of
time, it is about Landon's past, and it was summer, which was appropriate to the title of the story.

The color schemes use warmer tones and complementary shades that affect the emotions of the viewers, especially
when Jaime was diagnosed with leukemia. This movie also contains a number of moral values that will be beneficial to
those who watch it because it is also about loyalty and a religious message.

“Twenty Five Twenty One “:The series began with a focus on the character's coming of age, and both characters
matured significantly over time. This series is based on true events about loved ones accepting the results and moving on,
creating memories together, but love isn't as sweet as candy, you will face many challenges, and sometimes you just need
to let go and let fate take its course. Aside from romance, it represented love and loss, and where friendship and love
mattered the most. In addition, the series covers different parent-child relationships.

The story has two timelines, 1998 and 2022, capturing the Korean crisis in 1998 and the present day, which is Covid
19, which creates nostalgia for viewers by creating a parallel for both life style and technology from 1998 to the present
day. The series uses different color filters,
because it has different time lines, but the color filter was the basis to catch emotional responses of the viewers and to
easily understand what the characters are portraying for.

“ The Vow”: The third movie is indeed a tenderhearted love story with a few comedic elements thrown in, inspired by
a true story about loss of memory and reclaiming love. The Interviewee had interest with this movie because of the date
that it was released it was February 10, 2012. 4 days before Valentine's day. The movie gives us a proof that love endures
everything even in circumstances that are unimaginable, and in that case the curiosity hits us and we come up with the
questions on what can this two or one of them show or give the proof that the love they had vowed to each other and this
is the movie they/the interviewee is looking for. The movie gives inspiration, the perseverance of Leo inspires men and
women that Leo has this hope and never gives up to make the memories go back for Paige and the movie tells the
audience that whatever challenges may come, the love that is burning in their heart will always prevail, love endures
everything and maybe it will put on some twist in that love.

The setting is in Chicago, with flashbacks to present and past events. The color scheme in the movie is also warm.

The three movies and one series illustrate realistic relationships, whether romantic or not, and are about two loving
couples and friendship. It reminds us that certain people come and disappear from our lives simply because we were
supposed to learn from them and grow either with or without them. Those three college students enjoy watching movies
and television shows that start in the past and progress to the present. When it comes to challenges and difficulties, they
share challenges that two couples or family members encounter that also happens in real life . The setting is also similar
to our daily lives, such as school, house, and office .

This is a way of looking at the situation , relationship and looking at reality in our society and providing a system of
understanding explaining how this thing happens, how these things exist but more importantly why are these things
important to society and relevance to individuals.
