Fault Code 687

Turbocharger Speed Low - Warning Level

CODES REASON EFFECT

Fault Code: 687 Turbocharger Speed Low - Engine power derate. The ECM uses an
PID(P), SID(S): P103 Warning Level. Low turbocharger estimated turbocharger speed.
SPN: 103 speed detected by the ECM.

Turbocharger Speed Low Circuit

Circuit Description:
The turbocharger speed sensor is a variable reluctance speed sensor. It consists of a coil of wire and an iron core. A
signal is generated as the turbocharger shaft spins. The target on the turbocharger shaft is a ground flat in the center
of the shaft.

Component Location:
The turbocharger speed sensor is mounted in the center housing of the turbocharger.

Shop Talk:
This fault may come active if the electronic control module (ECM) senses boost pressure and engine speed while at the
same time a turbocharger speed signal is not present.
Items that can generate this fault code include:
• Turbocharger speed sensor
• Turbocharger speed sensor o-ring
• Engine harness
• Barometric pressure sensor
• Intake manifold pressure sensor
• ECM.
This fault becomes inactive any time the speed signal from the turbocharger speed sensor returns.

If the calibration software phase is less than 5.0.0.0 and this fault code is active at key-on with the engine not running,
the intake manifold pressure signal or barometric pressure sensor signal is inaccurate. Use INSITE™ electronic service
tool, Data Logger/Monitor to view the calibration software phase.
Make sure only one turbocharger speed sensor o-ring is present. If the old turbocharger speed sensor o-ring remained
when the new turbocharger speed sensor and turbocharger speed sensor o-ring were installed, this will create excessive
clearance and the turbocharger sensor will not read the turbocharger speed, causing the fault.
