HL Essay Planning and Writing Form
Instructions: While you are on a tight schedule, using your time intelligently is the best way to
help mitigate any sense of being overwhelmed. Below is an outline with subsequent due dates
that should help each of you break up the task into smaller, more manageable tasks.
Due Dates
February 8th ● Mark final example essay and set up
Google Docs.
February 9th (double lesson) ● Complete everything up to step four of
the graphic organizer.
February 10th (double lesson during TOK) ● Complete step 5 (citations)
February 11th (double lesson) ● Complete the outline section of the
graphic organizer. This is due on
Friday at noon, along with the
introduction of the essay.
February 15th (double lesson) ● Write essay in class.
February 16th (double lesson) ● Complete draft of the essay submitted
on ManageBac too to check for any
issues with plagiarism.
1.) What text are you going to write on and why is it important to you on a personal level?
Write your answer in the box below.
2.) What of the related seven central concepts (page 43 of the guide) and what does that
mean according to the IB Language & Literature guide and why/how is it relevant to the
text you selected? Explain this below.

3.) What is the relevant area of exploration (page 22 of the guide)? What does it mean
and how is it related to your text selection?
4.) What is your line of inquiry for this essay going to be? The line of inquiry needs to
state clearly what you are going to examine in the text you are using. This should be a
single question and it should include the central concept. You can also adapt one of the
six guiding concepts from the area of exploration that you identified above. IF THIS IS
EASILY GOOGLED, DON’T USE IT.
5.) You must research a minimum of two texts/websites that you will reference in your
essay. Use academic websites, NOT Wikipedia. These secondary sources should help
you develop a better understanding of the essay question.

and how that is related to your essay

6.) Below is a table that you will need to complete that outlines what parts of the text you will
explore and what the relevant quotes are that you will use from that section of the text.
The essay should be between 1200-1500 words in length, so the table below is
essentially going to serve as an outline for your essay. If you are doing a non-lit
analysis, you should be addressing most of the things in the Paper One outline.
