Demand, Name Brand, Proportion, Percentage, Percentage Bar

D. Skills - Be proficient at multiplication and division, be comfortable working

with fractions, be comfortable working with decimals

III. Objectives

• After the unit on Ratios, Proportions and Percentages TSWBAT solve and
interpret ratio, rates, and percentage problems using a variety of strategies.
• After the unit on Ratios, Proportions and Percentages TSWBAT solve ratio and
percentage word problems as well as being able to write their own ratio word
problem.

IV. Learning Experiences

A. Lesson One - Pretest on Ratios, Proportions and Percentages. An introduction into

the concept of ratios. The students will explore how to write and read
ratios. They will also learn how write a ratio based off of a picture,
table or sentence.

B. Central Lessons - Lesson 2: Strategies for solving Ratio Problems. The students will
learn how to solve ratio problems using ratio tables, pictures, number
lines and scaling.

Lesson 3: The students will spend more time practicing the different
strategies they learned in the previous lesson. They will use their
knowledge to help them measure the height of trees outside.

Lesson 4: Cross Multiplication. The students will be taught how to

use cross multiplication to solve ratio problems. They will be shown
why cross multiplication works and what they are actually doing
when they are cross multiplying.

Lesson 5: The students will learn what proportionality is and how we

use it in the world. The students will be challenged to make a scale
drawing that is correct proportionally.

Lesson 6: The students will learn about rates and unit rates. We will
discuss how a rate is a specific type of ratio. We will look at word
problems that involve rates. We will discuss what a unit rate is and
how to find a unit rate.

Lesson 7: The students will learn about how to compare prices

between items using a unit price. They will also discuss why prices
of similar items may vary and how this effects buyers and sellers.

Lesson 8: We will discuss percentages and some of the different

places we see percentages in the world around us. The students will

ratio problem solving strategies.

Lesson 9: Review Day. We will play a review game and caught up

on anything that we didn’t get to finish.

C. Final Lesson Lesson 10: The students will take an assessment which is the same
assessment that they took at the beginning of the unit. After they will
work on a cumulative review worksheet on ratio word problems. I
will also have the student take a quick questionnaire on what
activities and teaching methods they liked, what they understood,
what they struggled with and what I could have done better.

V. Evaluation Instrument and Methods

Think-pair-share, Exit Ticket, Questioning, Background probe, Note sheet, white boards,
Google Form, Kahoot, Thumbs up Thumbs down, IXL, Finding Ratios Worksheet, Discussion,
Word Problem Worksheet, Pre and Post Test

VI. Evaluation of Objectives

I will give the students a pre and post test at the beginning and end of the unit. I will also give
the students a work sheet dealing with solving and writing ratio word problems. The students
will fill out a questionnaire about the unit and my teaching.

VII. Evaluation of Daily Lessons

The students will end each day with an exit ticket for me to gauge their understanding from
that day.
