Grade 11 Lesson Plan: Evaluating Functions

This lesson plan summarizes a General Mathematics lesson for 11th grade ABM students on evaluating functions. The objectives are for students to understand key concepts of functions and accurately construct mathematical models to represent real-life situations using functions. The lesson will begin with an introductory activity to prime students on mapping functions. Students will then read the lesson objectives and discuss how to evaluate functions by replacing variables with values and performing operations. The teacher will ask questions to generalize the concept and students will evaluate sample functions. An assignment on evaluating domain functions will be given for

III. PROCEDURES
A. Preliminary Activities

1. Prayer
- The teacher will call a volunteer to lead the prayer. -One of the
students will lead
the prayer.

2. Greetings
- Good
- Good Morning class! How are you today?
morning
Ma’am April.
3. Priming
-The teacher will call out names and let them perform the
concept of mapping of a function by grouping themselves. -The students will
participate with
3.1 Motivation their groups.
- The teacher will introduce the activity (Think and Solve). The
teacher will instruct the students about the activity and let them
discover the topic that they are going to discuss.

If x = 5, what is 2x +7 ?
If x = x+1, what is x + 4? -The students will
participate in getting
the right answers.

3.2 Introduction
- The teacher will let the students read their lesson objectives and
topic that they are going to discuss.

B. Lesson Proper

1. Discussion

Evaluating a function means replacing the variable in the function, in this

case x, with a value from the function’s domain and computing for the
result. To denote that we are evaluating 𝑓 at 𝑎 for some 𝑎 in the domain of
𝑓, we write (𝑎). If one thinks of the function machine, evaluating a function
is similar to providing our machines with a valid input.

To evaluate a function, we should: • directly replace the indicated value to

the given function; • perform the indicated operation; and • simplify the
answer.

2 .Generalization

The teacher will ask these questions:

1. How do we evaluate a function?
2. How do we identify the domain of a function?

3 Evaluation
Final Output: The teacher will post questions and conduct a
quiz.

Evaluate the following functions.

1. ( 𝑓(3𝑥– 1) where f and q are as defined 𝑓(𝑥) = 4𝑥 + 1

2. 𝑞(2𝑥 + 3) where f and q are as defined 𝑓(𝑥) = 4𝑥 + 1

IF (𝑥) = { 𝑥 2 + 2, 𝑥 ≤ 1 .
|𝑥 − 3|, 𝑥 > 1

3. Evaluate: 𝑓(−5)
4. Evaluate ( 𝑓(5)

-During this time,

students will answer
the questions
accordingly.

-Students will take

the quiz
IV. Assignment -The teacher will take
The teacher will give the assignment for tomorrow’s discussion down notes about the
and review. assignment.

Evaluate the following domain of f.

Given (𝑥) = { 𝑥 2 + 2, 𝑥 ≤ 1 .
|𝑥 − 3|, 𝑥 > 1

Evaluate 𝑓(1)

- Good bye, Class.

-Good bye, Ma’am
