Hydraulic Analysis for the Opening Size of 1+725 Culvert
Reference: Design of Irrigation Headworks for Small Catchments by A.J.P. Ponrajah
Road: Maniyangama..,. Welangalla - Kadamaniya PRDA Road (1070)
Culverts: 1+691, 1+725 & 1+76S
Catchment Area: 68233.6598 m 2 (By Topographical A 'Cad Drawing)
1.1 Determination of Maximum Discharge
(Ref. Cl. 4.2.6}
Time of Concentration (Tc) = L / (V x 60) + 15 min
L, Length of Longest water course = 648m through 1+765 (By Topographical A 'Cad Drawing)
= 2126 ft
1.2 Determination of Average Velocity of the Stream
(Ref. Cl. 4.2.4)
Catchment Slope % = (Level of Highest Point in Longest Water Course, 190m wrf to 1:50000 map
Level of Point of Interest) x 100% / L
Level of point of interest,= 1+760 LHS, 3.05m offset= 23.441
Through 1+765 1+770 LHS, 3.0Sm offset = 24.341
1+765 LHS, 3.05m offset = 23.891
So Average Slope % = (190 - 23.891) / 648
= 0.26 mm/mm
= 25.63%
Therefore,
Approximate Average = 5.0 ft/sec
Velocity (Ref. Table 4.2.6)
Hence, Tc = 2125.984 / (5.0 X 60) .+ 15
= 22.08661
Say Tc = 22 min
Design rain fall intensity (Ref. Table. 4.1.2),
=xx D·Y
=Ra infall Intensity {Inches/ hr)
D = Duration (min)
X, Y are constants
Considering 100 yrs return period, wrt Fig. 4.1.21 Hydrological Zone 3
r
X and Y values
X = 174.59
Y = 0.834
When the storm duration (D) is equal or greater than the Time of concentration, Maximum discharge
occurs
Hence T, = D
11
Design rain fall intensity, I = 174.59 x 22 (-0.834)
= 13.26 inch/ hour
Area of the Catchment = 0.068 km 2
= 16.861 acre
Run-off coefficient for the
Catchment slope, 25.63% = 0.5
(Ref. Table 4.2.4)
Using rational formula, Cl. 4 .2.1
Q, M aximum Discharge,
(Cusecs) = CIA
C - Run off coefficient
- Rain fa II Intensity
A - Catchment Area (acres)
Q = 0.5 X 13.26 X 16.9
= 112.047 Cusecs
= 3.174 m 3/sec
Say = 3 m3/sec
Expected flow, 01ota1 = 3 m 3/ sec

01+725 = 3 - 0.638 - 0.488
So discharge thr 1+725 = 1.874
