SHORT COURSE ANNOUNCEMENT
TITLE: FUNDAMENTAL CRITICAL CARE SUPPORT (FCCS)
Introduction
Critical care services are evolving in Tanzania and hence there is an urgent need for capacity
building both in infrastructure and skilled healthcare providers. To support the Government of
Tanzania efforts in building skilled manpower, the Department of Internal Medicine at
MUHAS, in collaboration with Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH), Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac
Institute (JKCI), Cooper University Hospital (New Jersey) and the Society of Critical Care
Medicine (SCCM) from USA have organized a short course on Fundamental Critical Care
Support (FCCS).
Course Objectives
1. To increase knowledge and confidence of Health Care Workers in caring for critically-ill
patients in ICU settings.
2. To build skills of Health care workers in critical care technology through hands-on
simulation sessions.
Course Content
The course will cover important topics commonly encountered in the ICU including, but not
limited to mechanical ventilation, management of hemodynamic instability, Cardiopulmonary
and cerebral resuscitation, Critical care in special populations (Surgery and Pregnancy).
FCCS is standard course by the Society of Critical care of the USA. There will be pre-course
reading requirement through standard FCCS course book which will be provided to successful
candidates. Certificates and CPD points will be awarded upon completion of this course.
Target Audience
The course is limited to clinicians and nurses involved with patients in critical care settings in
tertiary, specialized hospitals as well as Regional referral hospitals.
Mode of Instruction
A combination of interactive lectures and hands-on simulation sessions.
Course Faculty
The course will be delivered by experienced critical care specialists (intensivists) from Cooper
University Hospital (Camden, New Jersey) and Cooper Medical School of Rowan University,
Morehouse School of Medicine and Georgia Cancer centre (Atlanta, Georgia) and Inova
Fairfax Hospital (Falls Church, Virginia).

Course dates: 4th and 5th November 2022.
Fee: The course is FREE to all selected participants.
Venue: MUHAS CHPE Building skills laboratories and lecture halls
Other Course Details
Course requires dedicated health care workers ready to learn and advance knowledge and skills.
About 36 hours of Pre-course reading are required. End of course FCCS examination will be
given and is a pre-requisite to certification.

telephone number as well as at least one referee.
There are limited seats available and registration will be on first come, first serve basis as well
as suitability of the candidates to impact ICU care in Tanzania. Successful candidates will be
notified via email.
