Second Semester 2021-2022

Mid-Semester Test
(EC-2 Regular)

Course No. : MM ZG515

Course Title : QUANTITATIVE METHODS
Nature of Exam : Open Book
Weightage : 30% No. of Pages =
Duration : 2 Hours 2
Date of Exam : 12/03/2022 (AN) No. of Questions =7
Note:
1. Please follow all the Instructions to Candidates given on the cover page of the answer book.
2. All parts of a question should be answered consecutively. Each answer should start from a fresh page.
3. Assumptions made if any, should be stated clearly at the beginning of your answer.

Q.1. The scores of an IPL team in 20 matches of previous season were in the following table.
Construct a stem-and-leaf display of these data. Select an appropriate stem to help with
construction [2]
252 161 222 152 141 152 144 159 104 140
164 139 104 138 149 161 158 132 168 126

Q.2. The following table summarizes the weights of 200 crates of harvested mangos. Calculate the
mean, median and mode of these data. [4]
Weight (kgs) 1-2 5-6 3-4 9-10 7-8
Frequency 20 31 78 43 28

Q.3. A survey was conducted to know the students feeling about online classes: The responses
were: Very Good, Good, No Difference, Bad, Very Bad. 500 students participated in the
survey with the following responses, 100 gave response Very Good, 75 gave response Good,
125 gave response No Difference, 150 gave response Bad, and rest gave response Very Bad.
(a) Chart the frequency distribution, relative frequency distribution, and cumulative
frequency distribution for these responses. [3]
(b) Construct a bar chart for these data using percentage frequencies [1]

Q.4. Water consumption of 10 households in an apartment are given in the following table.
524 1070 8211 6817 1286
9312 7283 2814 15416 35540
Construct a box-plot after computing the necessary values. Comment on the results [4]

Q.5. IMF gives outlook ratings to different firms after analysis: these will be either “AA” or
“CC”. In a recent report, the IMF summarized its ratings that 12 out of 30 oil firms are “AA”
and 20 out of 50 services firms are “CC” companies.
(a) Construct a contingency table based on this data [2]
(b) If we select one from these firms, find the probability that the
i. firm is a service firm [1]
ii. firm’s rating is “AA” [1]
iii. firm’s rating is “CC” [1]
iv. firm is an oil firm and has a rating of “CC” [1]
Q.6. The Paperboat juice packets contents volume approximate a normal distribution with a mean
of 200 ml and a standard deviation of 5 ml. Find the probability that a packet selected will
have a volume: [5]
a) greater than 195 ml
b) between 201ml and 204 ml
c) of less than 200 ml
d) What should be the volume of the packet such that the chance of filling packets more
than it is 4.5%.

Q.7. Act broadband’s goal is to have no more than five monthly internet failures on any 50 kms of
optical fibre cable. The company currently experiences an average of three monthly cable
failures per 25 kms of fibre. Let a denote the number of monthly line failures per 50 kms of
fibre. Assuming a follows a Poisson distribution: Find the probability that the company will:
a) meet its goal on a particular 50 kms of fibre, b) not meet its goal on a particular 50 kms of
fibre, c) have no more than five monthly failures on a particular 100 kms of fibre, d) have
more than 12 monthly failures on a particular 200 kms of fibre. [5]
