1 After Moses died, Joshua
the son of Nun became
the leader over the
nation of Israel. God said
to Joshua ‘Enter the
Promised Land. Be brave
and strong because I am
with you wherever you
go.’
2 Then Joshua told his
officers to go to
everyone in the camp
and tell them, ‘Get some
food ready, soon we
cross the Jordan river.’
3 Next Joshua sent two
spies into the Promised
Land to see what it was
like before they entered.
He wanted them to find
out how well the city of
Jericho was defended.
4 The spies found a place
to cross the river and
entered the city of
Jericho.
5 The two spies met a
woman called Rahab
who let them stay in her
house.
6 The King of Jericho found
out the spies were with
Rahab and sent a
message telling her to
hand them over. But she
said that the men had
left the city before the
gates were closed.
7 But the spies were
hiding on the roof.
Rahab had covered
them with stalks of flax
so they could not be
seen.
8 Later that evening
Rahab told the spies
that the people in
Jericho feared God. They
knew He had divided the
Red sea for HIs people.
They had heard God had
defeated King Og and
King Sihon and that He
was powerful enough to
give the land to the
Israelites.
9 The men escaped
through a window in
Rahab’s house that
opened out in the city
wall. They used a red
cord to climb down to
the ground. Rahab
begged them to save
her family when they
invaded the city. The
spies told her to hang
the same red cord out of
her window so they
would know where she
lived and that her life
would be spared when
they attacked the city.
10 When the spies returned
to Joshua they told him
everything that had
happened and said, ‘The
Lord has given us the
land. All the people are
terrified of us!’
Joshua was very happy.
And when they captured
the city they spared
Rahab’s life.
